Time Alone, Reciprocity, and Discipline -That’s Non-Negotiable- Results of the Seventh-Day 25 Initiative… And #Ecency Points

Pixabay-Jia3ep; edited in Paint

In the Initiative 25 column in Seventh-day Sunday a month ago: No, That’s Not Negotiable! -What Are Your Limits?— I explained how the people around me are calling me intolerant because there are certain things I’ve come to add to the list of things I won’t tolerate; and it’s not that I’ve become more demanding, but rather that I’ve struggled to set boundaries for a long time—not anymore. And this is one of the struggles I’ve wanted to bring to our #Hive platform and our @holos-otus community, because we need to set boundaries.
Let’s be clear: the truth isn’t comfortable for many, and our truth must be defended in some way… Setting boundaries ends up being a major challenge because it makes us feel uncomfortable—both those of us who set them and the people who have to abide by them. This is because we’re afraid of conflict, or because we feel guilty, or because we lack practice in doing so and need to start practicing; or, ultimately, because of low self-esteem.

Nurturing Your Relationships Without Neglecting Yourself

The truth is, it’s hard for us to set boundaries —that’s true— for the reasons mentioned earlier; but the consequences of not setting them are disastrous.

We increase our stress and anxiety in certain relationships, which, incidentally, end up being damaged.

Our self-esteem plummets; and—most importantly, in my view—we build relationships that aren’t beneficial, balanced, or conducive to personal growth.

Finally, playing a role for those around us ends up wearing us out, and we see this most clearly in the workplace.

I really liked Noelia Jiménez’s review: Boundaries, Self-Esteem, and Healthy Empathy to Nurture Your Relationships Without Neglecting Yourself, because it invites us to take our place in life with one key characteristic: mindful communication toward others and toward ourselves.

This is achieved through mindfulness, by practicing awareness of the here and now in our experiences and in how we perceive ourselves in the world.

For her, empathy doesn’t mean sacrifice, and assertiveness doesn’t mean expressing ourselves in a hurtful way; it’s the balance that nurtures relationships without neglecting who we are, and for that, we must have the ability to look at ourselves, listen to ourselves, and feel ourselves.

It’s about identifying how we build relationships without hurting ourselves—in a healthy, coherent way, and in harmony with our principles and values.

How can we do this?

We definitely need to identify our values, needs, and desires so that we can express them to others in a way that asks for respect and understanding.

One of the topics we’ve discussed most in the community is learning to say no without feeling guilty, standing our ground, and practicing self-care.

And, in any case, seeking help if we can’t handle it.

We often allow others to invade our personal space, and this happens very frequently with messages on our phones that demand an immediate response—as if it were a normal part of modern life. We must learn to respect others’ time and space so as not to make accusations or demands that invade or overstep another person’s boundaries.

This is where mindful communication is very beneficial to us, because it helps us understand what we want and how we can face the challenges and situations that our environment presents to us.

Furthermore, it helps us stay focused and disconnect from environmental distractions, allowing us to set boundaries in a more assertive, respectful, and calm manner.

The 25th Day Initiative: Results

Non-negotiables are very personal matters, which is why the initiative asked us to describe situations we couldn’t overlook in our communication with others.

@mamaemigrante was quite expressive in telling us that there were many things she wouldn’t tolerate; and I really identified with her, since it was difficult for me to make a list to share.

Above all, she reminded us that there are situations—such as nonviolence—that should never be negotiable.

For @issymarie2, boundaries are made of elastic material, and we must consider how far we can stretch them without taking a step backward; and that it’s important to keep them in mind because we become slaves to other people’s thoughts and to lifestyles that don’t belong to us.

@oneray was also concise and direct: Time to create, reciprocity in relationships, and discipline with those who accompany us on life’s journey; because leaving mediocrity and conformity behind requires change.

This is where I got the title for the results of Initiative 25, since these three situations Ramón presents to us are mature, clear, and universal.

@geila suggests limiting toxic dynamics, endless arguments, and invasions of personal space so we can rest and reconnect with ourselves; and not tolerating dishonesty or a lack of integrity in personal relationships.

We must also understand situations that are culturally ingrained in us, such as those pointed out by @amigoponc with labels like: the helpful neighbor, the good Christian, or the friend who’s always there; these are held up to us to make us feel guilty when we say no.

As we can see, the discussion showed that a person’s non-negotiables help maintain healthy self-worth, self-concept, and self-esteem.

We should also remember something @brujita18 pointed out: that boundaries depend on factors such as personality, tolerance level, and culture—and that they change over the years…

I’m very grateful to everyone who participated; you’ve done so from the heart.

And thank you, too, for helping us build community; so we’re sending a small symbolic gift in @ecency Points to @oneray and @geila with support from our friend @sorprendente and our friend @parauri
