Request For Educational Standard Change In Nigeria

One impact education should have is in the economy. In a situation whereby one has to be dependent on the government for a job after graduation from your course or field of study indicates that there is a problem in the educational standard of such country.

I will like to use Nigeria as a case study, I studied computer engineering , a five years course in the university of Uyo, Akwaibom state, Nigeria. And guess what? All through my stay, I wasn’t taught how to even repair a computer or how to code.

All I was taught was 8086 microprocessor which was used decades ago, coding in q-basic but I pay huge amount as fees to study the course.

Throughout the period of five years, we never knew how to dismantle or couple a computer system. All what we were taught is how to solve maths, read and pass, and how to construct wooden or metal chairs. After few years you forget what you have been taught.

To my own understanding, if I should study computer engineering I should be able to be effective on which ever aspect I choose. Be it hardware or software.

I should be able to repair a faulty computer system, design chips or design codes to function for a particular purpose but reverse is the case.

The educational syllabus of computer engineering is old not only for computer engineering but other important courses that play role in our society.

In fact, In Nigeria, the education system should be that when you graduate, you should be able to design computer component that will aid people to solve societal problems. This will inturn will improve our economical standard instead of borrowing money from china always without having anything to show forth.

One thing that annoys me most is the Academic Union of Nigerian universities (ASUU) are on strike due to inability of government to meet their demands. But its same government where the accountant general was accused of fraud, stealing 495 billion naira and yet still those money couldn’t be refunded and was shared amongst the bad leaders.

What will be the future of the unborn generation if we continue this way? Our leaders keep sending their children to study abroad and we the citizens, they don’t care about our educational standard. Students are forced to sit at home, some involve themselves in bad act such as stealing, unwanted pregnancy, drug addiction, some even die along the way.

Yes, I lost a friend whom by name was Felix Odonye, a student of Nasarawa state university during the period of ASSU strike.

If the educational system was still functional, the young man could have been in school trying to round off his program. But in a bid to make a living for the day, he was involved in an accident and he died.

The government are aiding to destroy the dreams of young ones.
Just take a look at china’s economy, as a secondary school student in china, you should be able to design and build a phone which is the Itel phone their government sells to us but in Nigeria, you will even go to school all you learn in secondary school is solving maths, weather, mixing acid and base, knowing witches and demons e.t.c

Conclusively
Change is part of what the government initiates, if there is bad leadership, it will inturn affect the economy and also the younger generations to come. I call on United nations to appropriately look into this to put an end to this menance to education in Nigeria.

Hope you have a nice week. Thank for reading.
