Secure your Assets

An acquaintance recently got her email and YouTube page attacked by Cyber Criminals. She was inattentive enough to let her guard down resulting in her opening a malware and subjecting her account to the mercy of these criminals.

Hackers are on the prowl, and they're looking for an opportunity to gain access to your digital profile and steal what they can. Even the official YouTube page was hacked earlier this year, and in the last couple of months several other pages of prominent YouTubers have followed suite.

One of the biggest criticisms of the crypto space has been its anonymousness that seemingly 'enables fraud' and allows cyber criminals (and criminals in general) to successfully steal, launder and get away with their deeds.

I recently read a report by The Hill (a media outlet) that suggested governments take action to make crypto illegal Worldwide, citing the increasing level of cyber crime which the writer suggested was enabled by cryptocurrencies. While the suggestion for a total ban of the space is typical mainstream media hysteria, there is one thing we cannot ignore.

It does appear relatively easier for criminals to move massive amounts of money undetected through the use of cryptocurrencies. This though isn't so much an indictment of crypto, as there have long been alternative ways these criminals make illicit financial flows long before crypto came. Simply making a scapegoat out of the space rather than looking for ways to address this issue is unacceptable. We should be looking for ways to address this and the more this is blown out of proportion by the media, the greater steps will be taken in this regard.

Great Danger

On an individual level, there is so much to lose by falling victim to ransomware attacks in the crypto space. We need to take great precaution in other to ensure that our passwords do not fall into the hands of these criminals. There has been more than a few incidents on hive and I've spoken about this in the past. It is a very present danger which we must me weary of. Be cautious about links even from those with a high reputation, unless proven to be someone trustworthy and make efforts to set your account recovery details in place.

Unlike the current monetary system where we may hold banks liable for some loss emanating from our accounts, on the blockchain we are largely on our own so we must take extra strides to secure our investments

But any time you let government/regulators intervene you lose a bit of your freedom. If decentralization is the mantra, government intervention is not a proper substitute to taking steps toward protecting yourself.
