Is This Not Another Form Of Begging?

Is This Not Another Form Of Begging?

I have been wondering why certain things are done on certain occasions, especially Christmas and New Year and I haven't gotten a good answer yet. We have different Wonderful cultures and traditions in the world, I must confess. Yet there are certain ways we celebrate some occasions that leave us asking questions.

One of the traditions observed during this festive period that I don't really understand is wishing someone a merry Christmas and expecting the person to give you money in return. It sounds funny, I don't know if you have witnessed it before, it's something very common in my place.

Sometimes, if they say "Happy Christmas" or "Happy New Year" and you seemed not to be making moves to give them money, they will go further to ask you for a Christmas gift. Some can even go plain, asking you to give them money. I know Christmas is a period of love and sharing of gifts but it shouldn't be for begging. If someone wants to give you a gift, you don't need to ask first, moreover giving is first from the heart, it doesn't sound nice to compel someone to give you a gift.

While I was a kid, I did it very well too. Those days, you will see children in groups moving from street to street, visiting house to house asking for a happy Christmas, myself included. It might look harmless but it has so much effect on the children, firstly, not all people are good, someone might gift your child something evil. I remember a certain time when the issue of secret society was trending amongst children in my place. So many children in my community were allegedly initiated during Christmas and New Year through the gifts they received from unknown people.

Another downside to it is it can make a child get used to begging people, even strangers and that's a very bad habit. This thing is not only common among children but even in adults, some of you will bear witness.

I have just been wondering who brought that idea and what benefits are attached to it. Honestly, It doesn't sound normal to me at all. I am not trying to criticize people but isn't that a coded form of begging? What's wrong with saying "Merry Christmas" and you get a" wish you the same or God bless you" response? As I am talking to you right now, someone is somewhere doing it.

I fear greatly because, through this very act, some individuals got themselves into trouble that left indelible marks on them. I am not saying we should not give gifts to people, like I have said earlier, it is a period of love, and love is attached to giving, if you don't give you don't have love.

I am not also saying we should reject gifts from people, if our conscience is free, we can accept it but we don't have to beg first. If this tradition of begging to be given gifts on Christmas and New Year will stop, I will be very Happy. But wishes are not horses, the only way out now is for us to discipline ourselves and also teach our children the right way to celebrate the season.

I can understand it from your perspective but you can see it from a different perspective also. Kids are innocent and little money can make them happy and I don't see anything wrong in this case and after getting mature very few of them demand the gift. Moreover, someone close to you may ask for a gift and I think the relationship between you and that person gave her/him right. Obviously, a random person doesn't ask for a gift from you and it can happen in exceptional cases. So from my perspective nothing wrong with it. It is just a matter of perspective.

You are right sir, it's very harmless. I love receiving gifts from my loves ones too and there is nothing wrong to ask for gifts from your loved ones but down here, people are abusing it, you really need to see how it is being done.. it might even get you offended, especially when you don't have it and the person is insisting..

Thanks for reading sir🥰❤️

I witnessed this a lot as a kid but these days, I hardly see people doing it again, the children we have these days have learned to mind their business 😅 I guess I won't even know if it's still happening around my neighborhood, considering I'm always indoors 😁

If you're asking me, I'll say yes because if it isn't begging, I don't know what else that is 😂

The season is about giving but some people are literally forcing people to give that giving 😂 that isn't giving again na.

I hope this stops totally although I'll say less and less people are doing it too abruptly now.

Hehehe, that's what I see it as. If a person wants to give you something, you don't need to beg, it will come freely. I don't know who brought that idea but the person has done us more harm than good🤣.

Thanks for reading ma

I don't think one should be forced to give anything as it is their choice to give or not.

Well, I believe there shouldn't be a specific day to share love and gifts, it should be a lifestyle, I see people who only share love and gifts on Christmas day as being hypocritical, love and kindness should be a way of life.

Hehhe, you got a huge point there, giving should be a lifestyle and not something done only on special occasions and people should not be compelled to give.

I have experienced this twice and I must say that I felt quite embarrassed by it because at the time of this coded begging, I wasn't with much and I had to promise later.

I don't know how or who started the tradition but I also want it to stop for heaven's sake.

Let's allow Goodwill to flow freely from the heart of the giver and not just because we asked.

I'm not saying asking is wrong but it's the method that irks me.

Hehhe, sorry for that kind of experience, honestly, it doesn't just look normal, imagine promising something you are not prepared for.

Giving is not wrong neither is asking but let people do it out of free will.

Thanks for reading 🥰

Some will even say " Do new year for me na". Well, it's unfortunate to see that it is not only kids who do it, even adults. I believe it is wrong to beg, ket someone who wants to give gifts give from their hearts.

Exactly ma, this acts can be so annoying sometimes. A lot of adults are also doing it. It's not wrong to ask but, begging for compelling someone to give us not okay
