The Crime I Witnessed

Crime has eaten the world so deeply that it no longer looks as serious as it should before the general public. In those days people who do illegal things ensure that their identity is hidden because they are scared of the wroth of judgement but in our days crime is something done in broad daylight.

I will tell you one reason why things changed to be like this, beloved ninety percent of the evil that has befallen us in Nigeria is traceable to one thing, corruption. Ever since our country has turned from the light into darkness everything else changed, I am sure this is not only in Nigeria but in most countries as well. Selfishness, greed , hatred and the likes are some of the causes of this great fall of Nigeria.

Everyone is so much concerned about himself and his family above anyone else. Love has totally died in the hearts of many that is why even when they harm others it is like playing Temple run game on their smart phones. It just feels normal.

How can a compassionate person declare someone who is guilty innocent by even swearing just because the person is related to him or gave him money? How can a good, god-fearing and normal human being give someone who is not qualified a job and throw the documents of the competent person into the waste paper basket simply because the other one is his cousin?

A thief would be caught right in the act, a murderer would be caught with tangible evidence but will be set free when his uncle , father or mother brings money or owns a very prominent position in the society. I have seen a guy who stabbed another fellow who almost died, set free two days after he was apprehended. we all thought he was facing the wroth of the law in the prison not knowing that he is busy enjoying life as a free man in Abuja. What an open door to crime.

With all these things happening do you think that men would be scared of doing evil before the face of everyone? They know that even if they commit crime they will be set free except if they don't have money. One may say not everyone in the law is evil yes! You are right but what have the good ones been doing so far? Do you know that not defending someone you know is innocent is also evil and wickedness? A lot of good and innocent persons are rotting in jail today because of that.

Only the poor man suffers the wroth of the law but the rich are gods and thus above the law😁. People have seen others set free even after committing deadly offenses therefore it doesn't freak them to do same because they know they will be set free afterwards. But if they see offenders being punished severely according as it should be, I assure you everyone else will be careful.

The saying one beans spoils the rest is the best to describe our current situation regarding crimes. Others follow the bad line simply because they saw others not being punished, but if the government will be holy and righteous again giving what is due to everyone, Nigeria would be the most decent country in the world. But you see no one wants to do that because we are all after the bag🤣🤣

The crime

Well I don't know the name to call this crime, it happened around last year when police were seriously working on the issue of internet fraud popularly known as Yahoo. There were some group of guys in my area who claim they are the members of community vigilant group. No one argued with them over that but what they are doing behind the scene is something else. Firstly I heard that two of them use claim they are police officers and they seize students properties and if the student can not give them the exact amount of money they asked for, they go with the properties.

Rumours kept coming out like that and I didn't believe it until it happened before my very eyes. It was one evening like that, there is a polytechnic close to my area , so my area is just like a student's village.

You know that those who suffer oppression most are the weak, those who don't know how the community works hehe. Normally almost every stranger behaves well in a new land. Just like a dog only barks when it is within it's territory but is meek outside. During those days there was a student who was living in my area he wears big clothes and he locked his hair, typically he looks like a Yahoo boy. The truth is I can't really tell if he was one or not.

On that very day, the guy was passing close to my house near my mother's restaurant which is just opposite the main road, unfortunately, those vigilant boys who extort things from people happened to be there. The truth is those guys look very scary and know how to really inflict fear on a person. They called the young boy passing with his side bag and dreadlock.

I was viewing them from a distance I don't know how their conversation went but I saw the boy moving back like he was trying to run, the next thing was the two so called vigilant boys rushed him and asked him to go on his knees, when he did. The one who looks big among them started searching the pockets of the student.

After a while, they asked him to give them his phone, the guy was really scared because of their threats so he gave them the phone and they asked him to bail himself out right there with money. The funniest part of the thing was that this very criminal acts was taking place just besides the road while everyone was passing but no one did anything. That was how they forced this guy and he gave them money before they gave him back his phone. I was so offended with what they did but what can I really do?

The truth is I didn't report the case, you may ask why? The reason is because I don't even know this student too well. If I report the case and the police asked me to provide the guy that was robbed how can I get him? Besides that, though I know the guys that robbed him, but where will I find them? Automatically it means reporting the case would implicate me. If care is not even taken I might end of being the one in the cell. Another side of it is that, what if they police didn't catch them, that student's life might be in danger

The matter ended like that without anyone doing anything though they gave him back his phone but he had to give them money first. My pain is that those boys went free and I heard some weeks later that they forcefully collected a lady's phone and ran away. Such a bad story. Evil occuring right before our eyes yet there's nothing anyone can do about it.

In conclusion, we all need to rise for a better society to live in, crimes will never stop occuring but we can put fear upon those who practice it and thus make it reduce immensely. I remember one time a guy who stole a motor cycle got burnt alive by okada boys in my town. During those days everyone was careful to steal motorcycle. I am not saying that taking cruel action like that is what we need to thrash such evil. That was judgement I know but it was too fierce and inhuman. Instead of taking lives let the culprit pay double for their offences but they should retain their lives. Execpt the government and society at large takes drastic measures against crime by giving offenders what is due, I am scared crime might soon become like festive dance on the streets
