The Past Should Not Be Used To Judge The Present

You can never understand a thing better if you have not had a firsthand experience with it. Sometimes, when I hear people say things like “those who show empathy are showing weakness,” I laugh.

You won't understand what it feels like until you or someone close to you is in that same condition.

Sometimes we let things go not because we are not hurt, not because we do not know how to punish, not because we are too religious or God-fearing, but because we were once in those shoes.

We are humans; whether we like it or not, we will err. We come from different places, we have different mindsets and different ways of reasoning.

We can never please everyone, even though the things we believe are right and fair might be offensive to others.

Offending people is just inevitable, no matter how we try, unless we stop interacting with people, offence is certain to happen.

What then can we do? The short answer is “we should be mindful of the kind of things we say or do, especially in public spaces.”

Nowadays, people speak carelessly, dress carelessly, behave carelessly, and think it is normal.

Sometimes, our speech or behavior might not even be bad; it might result from impulsive reactions out of pain or hurt. Sadly, the world forgives, but it doesn't forget.

The moment will pass, we will talk, and people might even support us, but subsequently, we will be held accountable for those things.

This thing is common on social media; people love making all kinds of analyses on situations that don't concern them in the name of content creation.

They talk as if their opinions were asked. I understand that sometimes we want to also speak out, we get touched over certain things and want to express ourselves, but we must learn to be careful because the system of this world doesn't show mercy.

Imagine, for instance, that people are talking bad on a government, and you joined them to talk dirty about a leader, and even posted it on some of your social media platforms, and people commented all manner of things, then life took you to that same leader's office to ask for a favor, how would you possibly do that?

Even if the leader is unaware of what you said, it won't be easy for you around him/her.

This is why we must be careful about what we say. It's not everything we should make a comment about.

Coming back to our prompt, honestly, it's never fair to deny people an opportunity or refuse to grant them liberation because of their past actions.

No matter what a person said in the past is not enough for us to judge them by that. We need to understand that people can change.

Regardless of what they once believed or said, the human heart is ever open to change.

I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, but if at all they are given a chance and they fail the second time, then we have the right to treat them based on what they display currently.

If not, people's past should not be a major criterion to judge their present. The past should be in the past.
