Hobby Collecting: Not A Bar

The year of the rat has not been kind to the world. That is, if you are human or some of those animals who happened to become infected by COVID-19 as well. You thought the news about a tiger testing positive in New York was ridiculous? Wait until you see the true meaning of a global pandemic. Not even your furry friends are safe! Well, it's all preliminary and I am going off track.

So, I decided to pick up some silver with zodiac designs. Since us retail investors beggars can't be choosers, it didn't matter what I bought. Almost everything on APMEX is at $5 over spot. Here is an example of what I obtained from their limited inventory:

That would be the front and back of that particular silver piece. I'm not sure why the font on the back has progression of enlarged texts. The only thing I care about is that they are .999 fine silver.

I also managed to pick up some other interesting pieces along the way. One of them is the silver arrow heads. Those come in one-ounce units as well. Now, why would you want silver arrowheads? Can you even shoot a silver arrow?

If you live around the Rocky Mountains, you know wolves are a thing. One could never be too careful about them werewolves. /s

There were other designs including Day of the Dead skulls, which come in two-ounce units. Unfortunately, those are too colorful for my taste. If I wanted to put more money into silver decors, I may consider silver bullets. You see where this is going? Although, those tend to price much higher than the already steep $5 over spot per ounce of silver.

Since there's not much else to do right now, I will jump on interesting silver designs when possible. If anything, it is kinda fun.

I wish I could afford to buy precious metals.

I would probably do things like buy food or trips to the gym with the money though.

Although right now I'd probably buy bitcoin. The prices are still pretty low, and still below my breakeven.

"...they are .999 fine silver."

Pshaw, six nines or bust.

It's a matter of choice.

I don't even buy massive amounts of them.

I almost got a gold rat bar, would have been very thin though. Prices went up too much for my liking.

I find gold easier to get if you go at it 1 gram at a time.

My problem with gold is shipping and packaging get expensive. Grams are a fine unit though. 1 Troy ounce is usually a little too much for me. Koreans have a unit call a don which is around 3.5g, that's actually decent. But, I just tend to buy the collector's items.
For investing short to medium term I just get paper gold because it's the easiest to deal with, but I sold all that now because my targets were reached. I'm too afraid to hold on to it if the price goes crazy because it's difficult to trust.

Just a disclaimer, I haven't tried platinum or palladium yet.

I can't really find anywhere to buy those at prices and units that are realistic for me.

Right now, online is probably your best bet.

The local dealers where I live are by appointments only thanks to the outbreak.

My wife would love those sugar skulls. I might have to check them out. So how does this work as an investment? Is value based on the design that is imprinted on them or is it basically just whatever the current price of silver is at?

Price of silver and collector value can both affect the price.
