Beauty Parlor Stroke Syndrome: The Hidden Dangers of Salon Hair Washes

Both male and female, we all go to the salon o we can treat our hair, and look good, since health is wealth but who would expect that a trip to the salon can become a health journey were a person will begin to fight for their life. In this post, I will be talking about hair salon case studies that where people fought for their lives after visiting the salon.

Cheryl Taylor thought it would be like every normal hair salon visit, so when she got to the salon, she reclined back in the seat to wash hair but started to feel dizzy. The hair dresser sat her up back and her husband was called. She went home and decided to rest by lying down but instead of health to subside, it continued to deteriorate as she began to feel nausea and weak. Her daughter forced her to go to the hospital and although she was reluctant, she went to the hospital and on getting to the hospital she was told that she was suffering from a stroke.

Before I continue, there are other cases of people visiting the salon and finding themselves suffering from stroke. An example of such case is that of a nurse named Adele Burns who went to the salon to have a hair cut. She had to wash her hair and felt a twitch while washing her hair, the next day she suffered a stroke. Another example is sound engineer Dave Tyler who went to a salon to have his hair done. He wanted to have a hair wash and he got it but when he bent his head, he felt a discomfort but didn't worry much about it. Two days later, he began to feel a splitting headache after which one side of his body went numb. He began to feel nausea and when he tried to drink water, but he was not able to swallow. This led fluid to get to his lugs leading to pneumonia. He collapsed afterwards and was rushed to the brain. It was confirmed that he was suffering from a stroke as a result of blood clots burst sending smaller clot into his brain.

That said, you must have heard of Beauty parlor syndrome. It was first discovered in the 1990s when doctors realized that so many women who went to the salon to have their hair washed stretching their head to the back suffered a stroke and according to Dr. Sarah Jarvis, washing the hair is what comes with risk.

Stroke would occur when blood isn't flowing towards the brain, preventing the brain from receiving the required oxygen and nutrients needed for functioning. This can be caused by blood clot which an happen anywhere in the body, and since the body is enclosed, the clot reaching the brain is somehow inevitable. A stroke is an emergency case that can lead to brain damage which could be permanent leading to numbness or paralysis of one side or both side of the body.

To identify a person with stroke they could have slurred speech, inability to raise arms, drooping face, or slow timing in responding. So how would people going to wash their head lead to a stroke? It has been identified that a damage in the vessels carrying blood to the brain can be the cause. If the lining of the vessels such as the Right Subclavian, The Vertebral artery or the Basilar artery is torn, it can lead to the formation of blood clots which can lead to a stroke.

Although it is difficult to establish the exact way this vessels get damaged as a result of stretching, there have been several cases of people experiencing stroke after stretching backwards for a wash. Medical practitioners have advised that people should wash their head forward so as to prevent the damaging of vessels sending blood to the brain.

These incidents are rare, they underscore the importance of being aware of seemingly innocuous activities that could pose health risks. As we continue to enjoy salon services, it's crucial to consider safer practices, like forward-leaning hair washes, to prevent such life-threatening events. Remember, health and safety should always come first, even in the pursuit of beauty

Stroke caused by a hair wash, trigger by stretching of the neck.

My hypothesis: Stretching of the neck during a hair wash causes too much pressure to build with a resultant effect seen in intravascular pressure causes a rupture in blood vessel which eventually causes a bleed.

I am guessing most of them had an haemorrhagic stroke
