The Anatomy of the Human Skull

It's a beautiful day to discuss the skull, I mean the bones of the skull. Do you remember your junior school teacher telling you that the suture is an immovable joint that covers the skull? To begin this anatomy of the bones of the Skull, I will begin with the Coronal Suture bone which is the bone that separates the frontal bone from the parietal bone, posteriorly. At the sagittal region of the brain is the Sagittal suture and which separates the parietal bones on the right and left sides of the skull. Posteriorly, in the skull is the Lambdoid suture which separates the parietal bone from the occipital bone, and it has two parts. Another suture in the brain is the Squamous suture which separates the temporal bone which is below from the parietal bone which is above.kenhub, ncbi, kenhub.

The Frontal bone of the skull is the bone that is found anterior of the coronal suture. The frontal bone is made up of the Glabella which is a smooth part of the forehead above the eyebrows and in the middle of the forehead. The orbit of the eyes is made of bones, and at the top of the orbit is made up of supraorbital margin, and it has a supraorbital notch. In the frontal skull bone, inside the cavity is the Anterior Cranial Fossa. ncbi. The parietal bones are another of the skull which is divided by the sagittal suture. After the parietal bones are the occipital bone which is divided by the lambdoid sutures. The occipital bone has the external occipital protuberance. Lateral to the external occipital protuberance is the superior nuchal lines, and downwards the superior nuchal line is the medial nuchal line, and below the lines are the inferior nuchal lines. kenhub, ncbi, kenhub 2

Towards the back of the skull, towards the Occiput, there is a large hole known as the Foramen magnum, and close to it are knobbies known as the Occipital Condyles, and there is a fossa behind the Occipital condyle known as the Condylar fossa. Within the Occipital condyle and the Condylla fossa are two holes are known as the hypoglossal canal which is to the Occipital Condyle, and the Condylar canal close to the condylar fossa. Internal of the occipital bone is the Posterior cranial fossa. ncbi, kenhub, anatomystandard.

The Temporal bone is composed of the Petrous part, which is made up of holes such as the jugular foramen where the jugular bone exit from. The back of the petrous part of the temporal bone is the Internal acoustic Meatus where the vestibulocochlear nerve runs through. Above the petrous part is the sphenoid bone which has lots of canal which include the carotid canal, the foramen lacerum (which is medial to the carotid canal), Foramen Spinosum (laterally away from the foramen lacerum), Medially to the foramen spinosum is the Foramen Ovale, and at the superior and medial area of the Foramen Ovale is the Foramen Rotundum. Above the foramen ovale is a fissure known as the Superior orbital fisure. Above the superior orbital fissure is the Optic canal where the optic nerve runs through. At the center part of the sphenoid bone, towards the back is a sellae known as the Dorsum Sellae, and at the front is the Tuberculum sellae. Between the two sellae is the Hypophyseal fossa which is where the area where the pituitary gland is located. At the middle of all the Sellae bones is the Sella turcica of the sphenoid bone. The Anterior Clinoid Processes are another bony fangs around the optic canal, while its posterior clinoid processes are protrusion at the back of the dorsum sellae. These bones are between the the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone, and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone.kenhub, verywellhealth, kenhub.

The Ethmoid bone is made of the Cribriform Plate which has some openings such as the Olfactory Foramina where the olfactory nerve runs through. Also, the ethmoid bone has a perpendicular protruded part known as the Crista Galli. Inthw Ethmoid bode is the Superior Nasal Concha. At the Temporal bone aspect of the skull, towards the zygomatic bone is the Zygomatic process, below the zygomatic process is the external acoustic meatus which is the ear canal. Below the External Acoustic Meatus is the Mastoid process which is a breastike shape process and anterior to the mastoid process is the styloid process. When the zygomatic process and the temporal process meet, they form the zygomatic arch and the process that connect the zygomatic bone to the frontal bone is known as the zygomatic process.kenhub, ncbi

The fetal skull is similar to the adult skull but then it has fontanelles which is a connective tissue that allows the skull to expand as the child grows so the brain can increase in space. At the anterior part of the skull is the anterior fontanelle, while towards the posterior part is the posterior fontanelle. At the lateral part of the skull is the mastoid fontanelle, and at towards the sphenoid bone is the sphenoid fontanelle.ncbi, childrenscolorado.
