Biphasic Sleep Experiment UPDATE
One week ago, I wrote a post about a sleep/wake experiment I am doing this summer. Post link here
I was also walking daily as part of a personal fitness challenge in the #Move2Earn space. Then for a period of about a week, I stopped daily walking. The triple-digit summer heat made evening walks less than ideal and I couldn't get my treadmill steps to count in the same way actually walking my neighborhood. So I took a break.
Turns out that the success I had been experiencing with biphasic sleep also decided to take a break. It did't happen all at once. It took about 3 days before I wasn't able to not maintain what had been my sweet spot of wake and sleep. I initially thought it might have something to do how I take weekends off. On Friday and Saturday nights I was taking a full night's sleep and then on Sunday night was starting my biphasic sleep schedule again. But I just couldn't get back into it. I didn't have energy in the evening to work. I felt uninspired and unmotivated.
Then I had a #WalkTalkChallenge interview and I walked for 45 minutes. After it was over, I felt great. We are still in triple-digit heat so the next day I decided to try walking in the morning. I walked a little over 3K steps on Sunday morning. Then I walked another 3K steps in the evening. So, I decided to see if I could get back on track and work through the night.
I worked until about 7am and then went to bed. I set an alarm for 9:30am and second alarm 10:00am. By 10am I was up. By 10:15am, I was drinking my first cup of coffee.
I have a busy evening with a video panel session and a Twitter Spaces guest spot. So, I'll have to figure out how to get my afternoon nap and daily walk in even if it has to be on the treadmill. The key to success for me means that daily walks go hand-in-hand with biphasic sleep.
Stay tuned for future updates as this experiment continues.
