Book review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight ❤️ [ES/EN]

¡Hola amigos lectores! ¿Alguna vez les pasó que vieron el tráiler de una película que todavía no salió y les llamó tanto la atención que al enterarse de que es la adaptación de un libro decidieron leerlo? Bueno, esto es lo que me pasó a mí con esta lectura que no estaba en mis planes pero fue un buen acierto.

Hi, fellow readers! Have you ever seen the trailer of a movie that hasn't been released yet and it caught your attention so much that when you found out that it is the adaptation of a book, you decided to read it? Well, this is what happened to me with this reading that wasn't in my plans but it was a good choice.

El libro se llama La probabilidad estadística del amor a primera vista, su autora es Jennifer Smith, y trata sobre una chica y un chico que se ven por primera vez en un aeropuerto rumbo a un lugar en el que no quieren estar pero deben hacerlo. Sin embargo, el convivir 7 horas en un espacio reducido hizo que quedaran flechados el uno del otro. Pero, ¿Será una historia de amor fugaz o solo el comienzo?

The book is called The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, its author is Jennifer Smith, and it is about a girl and a guy who meet for the first time in an airport on their way to a place where they don't want to be but have to. However, living together for 7 hours in a confined space makes them fall in love with each other. But will it be a fleeting love story or just the beginning?

Hadley es una chica de 17 que perdió su avión hacia Londres por 4 minutos. Al llegar al aeropuerto, luego de discutir con su madre y esta marcharse, Hadley piensa que si hubiera hecho algo diferente podría haber tomado su vuelo a la hora correcta. Aunque también piensa en que es una buenísima excusa para evitar ir al casamiento de su padre al que no ve hace un año y medio, después de que decidiera separarse de su madre e iniciar una nueva vida en Londres de la que Hadley no sabe nada. Ni siquiera conoce a su futura madrastra, pero ella la eligió de dama de honor y su madre le insistió en que debería ir, así que no iba a dar marcha atrás y cambió su boleto para el próximo vuelo. Aunque esto signifique llegar con el tiempo justo, si tenía suerte.

Hadley is a 17-year-old girl who missed her flight to London by 4 minutes. When she arrives at the airport, after arguing with her mother and her mother leaves, Hadley thinks that if she had done something different she could have taken her flight at the right time. Although she also thinks that it's a great excuse to avoid going to her father's wedding, whom she hasn't seen for a year and a half, after he decided to separate from her mother and start a new life in London, of which Hadley knows nothing. She doesn't even know her future stepmother, but she chose her as a bridesmaid and her mother insisted she should go, so she wasn't about to back out and changed her ticket for the next flight. Even if it meant arriving on time, if she was lucky.

Ahora tiene unas cuantas horas de espera en el aeropuerto con sus maletas en la mano. Hasta que un joven chico se ofrece a ayudarla y eso fue todo. El chico se llama Oliver, es inglés y se encuentra en Estados Unidos estudiando en la universidad, pero al parecer, también tiene que cumplir con un acontecimiento familiar. Pasan esas horas hablando y comiendo, cuando se hace la hora de subir al avión se dan cuenta que les tocó asientos cercanos, separados por una persona. Una dulce anciana que decide ceder su lugar a Oliver para que esté cerca de Hadley.

Now she has a few hours of waiting at the airport with her bags in hand. Until a young guy offers to help her and that's it. The boy's name is Oliver, he's English and he's in the United States studying at the university, but apparently he also has a family event to attend. They spend those hours talking and eating, when it's time to board the plane they realize that they have seats close to each other, separated by a person. A sweet old lady who decides to give up her seat to Oliver so he can be near Hadley.

Tras un vuelo que parece que duró toda una vida, la claustrofobia de Hadley olvidada gracias a la compañía de Oliver y sus charlas, es hora de enfrentarse a la realidad y seguir sus caminos después de un beso de despedida. Pero, ¿habrá sido de verdad una despedida?

After a flight that seems to have lasted a lifetime, Hadley's claustrophobia forgotten thanks to Oliver's company and their chats, it's time to face reality and go their separate ways after a goodbye kiss. But was it really goodbye?

Este libro logró sorprenderme, la historia es bastante simple y sencilla. Nos habla de una adolescente que se alejó de su padre tras su engañó, un padre al que quería mucho, y ahora se siente una extraña en su vida, como si sobrara. A lo largo de la historia nos vamos a encontrar con pequeños flashes del pasado de Hadley vividos con su padre que nos ayudará a armar el rompecabezas de su relación.

This book managed to surprise me, the story is quite simple and straightforward. It tells us about a teenager who moved away from her father after he cheated on her, a father she loved very much, and now she feels like a stranger in his life, as if she was left over. Throughout the story we are going to find small flashes of Hadley's past lived with her father that will help us to put together the puzzle of their relationship.

Al principio sentí bronca por las acciones del padre, al igual que Hadley, pero luego la trama te va llevando hacia el momento exacto en el que sucedieron las cosas y te enseña que a veces no hay explicaciones ni respuestas, solo son situaciones que pasan y que uno no puede controlar. No podes controlar cuando vas a conocer a alguien y te vas a enamorar de esa persona e iniciar una vida diferente a la que tenías. Que será duro marcharte, sobre todo cuando tenes hijos de por medio y dejarlos, pero es de valientes tomar esa decisión también. Eso es de lo que trata el libro, de amor y de segundas oportunidades.

At first I felt anger for the father's actions, as did Hadley, but then the plot takes you to the exact moment when things happened and teaches you that sometimes there are no explanations or answers, they are just situations that happen and that you can't control. You can't control when you are going to meet someone and fall in love with that person and start a different life than the one you had. It will be hard to leave, especially when you have children and leave them, but it is brave to make that decision too. That's what the book is about, love and second chances.

Al final parece tonto perder tanto tiempo estando enojados con las personas que amamos y nos aman porque uno no sabe cuándo va a ser la última vez que los veamos. Hadley tuvo que aprender esta lección y yo con ella, es un personaje que maduró mucho en tan solo 24 horas, parece loco todo lo que tuvo que vivir en tan poco tiempo. Hasta leerlo se siente como si hubiera pasado más tiempo y solo fueron pocas horas entre los acontecimientos que sucedían.

In the end it seems silly to waste so much time being angry at the people we love and love us because one doesn't know when the last time we will see them will be. Hadley had to learn this lesson and I with her, she is a character that matured a lot in just 24 hours, it seems crazy how much she had to live through in such a short time. Even reading it feels like more time has passed and it was only a few hours between events happening.

Como verán es una historia muy reflexiva, es muy linda. Me emocioné en varias ocasiones, amé el amor que se mostró entre padre e hija. Y no olvidemos el amor romántico, que al final Hadley ganó más en ese viaje de lo que hubiera pasado si decidía no ir. A veces son segundos o 4 minutos lo que pueden determinar tu próximo movimiento y tu camino a seguir. Este libro me mostró esa lección.

As you can see it is a very reflective story, it is very beautiful. I was moved on several occasions, I loved the love that was shown between father and daughter. And let's not forget the romantic love, that in the end Hadley gained more on that trip than what would have happened if she decided not to go. Sometimes it's seconds or 4 minutes that can determine your next move and your path forward. This book showed me that lesson.

La verdad que me quedé muy reflexiva al terminarlo. Además la película se estrena la semana que viene, si no me equivoco, en la plataforma de Netflix, así que espero que esté a la altura del libro también.

The truth is that I was very reflective when I finished it. Plus the movie is coming out next week, if I'm not mistaken, on the Netflix platform, so I hope it lives up to the book as well.
