🎬 Movie Review: Voicemails for Isabelle [ES/ES]

¡Hola amigos! Hoy les quiero hablar acerca de la nueva romcom de Netflix: Mensajes de voz para Isabelle. Aunque no sé sí catalogarla como una comedia romántica porque es mucho más que eso, es como una carta de amor a la hermandad.

La historia sigue a dos hermanas que son muy unidas, Jill e Izzy. Isabelle tiene una enfermedad seria como lo es la fibrosis quística, esto le impide llevar una vida normal, pero para que no se sienta mal, su hermana Jill le cuenta absolutamente todo lo que pasa en su vida como una forma de hacerla reír y que lo viva con ella. Cuando crecen, Jill se muda a San Francisco para cumplir su sueño de ser una gran pastelera, y mantiene a Izzy al tanto de todo. Hasta que un día recibe la fatídica noticia de que ella muere. Para sanar empieza a mandar mensajes de voz al número de su hermana contándole su día como hizo siempre. Lo que no sabe es que el número de teléfono ahora lo tiene otra persona, Wes, quien escucha todos sus mensajes con atención y empieza a surgir una conexión unilateral por su parte. Tanto que decide viajar a San Francisco para intentar conocer a Jill.

The story follows two sisters who are very close—Jill and Izzy. Izzy has a serious illness—cystic fibrosis—which prevents her from leading a normal life, but to keep her from feeling down, her sister Jill tells her absolutely everything that’s going on in her life as a way to make her laugh and let her experience it alongside her. When they grow up, Jill moves to San Francisco to fulfill her dream of becoming a great pastry chef, and she keeps Izzy up to date on everything. Until one day, she receives the devastating news that her sister has died. To cope, she begins sending voice messages to her sister’s phone number, telling her about her day just as she always did. What she doesn’t know is that the phone number now belongs to someone else, Wes, who listens to all her messages intently and begins to develop a one-sided connection with her. So much so that he decides to travel to San Francisco to try to meet Jill.

Para serles sincera, empecé a ver esta película sin saber con lo que me iba a encontrar. No leí la sinopsis, pero era inevitable que quisiera verla porque me encantan los dos actores principales y quería ver algo del estilo. La cuestión es que a los 15 minutos ya estaba llorando. Ahí entendí que era una de esas películas con un trasfondo más profundo, pero luego se me pinchó un poco porque sentí que se volvió un poco tonta la trama al lado de lo que había pasado en esos primeros minutos. Hasta que volvió a remontar cuando ella empezó a mandar estos mensajes de voz a su hermana y Wes los comenzó a recibir.

To be honest, I started watching this movie without knowing what to expect. I didn't read the synopsis, but I couldn't help but want to watch it because I love both of the lead actors and wanted to see something in that vein. The thing is, I was already crying 15 minutes in. That’s when I realized it was one of those movies with a deeper underlying message, but then it lost me a bit because I felt the plot got a little silly compared to what had happened in those first few minutes. Until it picked up again when she started sending these voice messages to her sister and Wes began receiving them.

La película también fue muy divertida, eso no se los discuto, y el romance es del tipo que me encanta. Ese que no necesita ser explícito, pero sí sentirse real con solo verlo. Creo que también ayudó la química que tuvieron los dos actores, me encantó. Y el regreso de Nick Robinson a las romcom no pasó desapercibido, fue algo de lo más comentado en redes sociales por lo que estuve viendo. Pienso igual, el mundo necesita más comedias románticas protagonizadas por él.

The movie was also really funny—I won’t argue with that—and the romance is exactly the kind I love. The kind that doesn’t need to be explicit, but feels real just by watching it. I think the chemistry between the two actors helped, too—I loved it. And Nick Robinson’s return to rom-coms didn’t go unnoticed; from what I’ve seen, it was one of the most talked-about topics on social media. I agree—the world needs more romantic comedies starring him.

Más allá del amor romántico, queda claro que la película es un canto al amor entre hermanos. Ese que puede ser uno de los vínculos más importantes de nuestra vida si sabemos apreciarlo. Este lazo entre Jill e Isabelle me mantuvo emocionada toda la película, y es hermoso que siguieran unidas a pesar de la tragedia que las separó, porque el amor de verdad no conoce barreras. Las personas que amamos siempre se quedan con nosotros aunque ya no estén físicamente.

Beyond romantic love, it’s clear that the film is an ode to the love between siblings—a bond that can be one of the most important in our lives if we know how to appreciate it. This bond between Jill and Isabelle kept me moved throughout the entire film, and it’s beautiful that they remained close despite the tragedy that separated them, because true love knows no boundaries. The people we love are always with us, even when they’re no longer physically here.

Otro punto importante a destacar es el soundtrack, siempre apreciare que a la historia la acompañe buena música y más si incluyen canciones de Taylor Swift, que ya saben que yo la amo, y encima también hicieron varias referencias a ella en la película. Same Wes, same. Por cierto, que nunca se olvide la sana costumbre de salir corriendo en busca del amor de tu vida. ❤️

Another important point to highlight is the soundtrack—I’ll always appreciate it when a story is accompanied by good music, especially if it includes songs by Taylor Swift, whom, as you know, I love, and on top of that, they also made several references to her in the movie. Same here, Wes. By the way, let’s never forget the wholesome tradition of running off in search of the love of your life. ❤️

¿Qué decirles? La verdad es que amé esta película, no sabía qué esperar, pero superó mis expectativas con todas las reglas. Se fue derecha a mi top de mejores romcom, me encantó y la volvería a ver. Tiene cierta inocencia, es picante también, el romance es 10/10, y lo mejor es que hay un amor mucho más grande como lo es el de la hermandad. No les cuesto más nada porque la tienen que ver ustedes, pero sepan que está super recomendada por mi parte.

What can I say? The truth is, I loved this movie. I didn't know what to expect, but it exceeded my expectations in every way. It went straight to the top of my list of best rom-coms—I loved it and would watch it again. It has a certain innocence to it, it's spicy too, the romance is a 10/10, and the best part is that there's a much greater love—the love of sisterhood. I won’t say any more because you have to see it for yourselves, but just know that I highly recommend it.
