Back To Crafts Again

Today I'd like to show you more photos that I took at the Festival of Transylvanian Crafts. This is the second part of my adventure, you can check the first part here.

Back To Crafts Again.jpg

I was looking forward to this event, mostly to see what can bring new to us. Being the first edition this year, I knew it's going to be a test, but even so, the whole thing exceeded my expectations.

20230923_112938a.jpg

I was hoping to see a lot of workshops, mainly to show people how those beautiful things are done, but also to let them try it out as where else you have a chance to try these out?

20230923_113009a.jpg

This lady was weaving. She was doing the work, but I suppose if I would have asked her to let me try it, she wouldn't have said no.

20230923_112954a.jpg

Now imagine yourself living in the 18th or 19th century and making all the clothes you see on the photo, by hand, as the lady did.

20230923_113015a.jpg

20230923_113042a.jpg

This is a traditional Hungarian folk costume, specific to Transylvania. Sometimes the apron has a red and black floral embroidery. Sometimes the stripes on the skirt are thicker. It depends on the region.

20230923_113051(0)a.jpg

20230923_113108a.jpg

Believe it or not, the man in the photo was making those black strings you see on the vest. That's a specific decorative element you see on the Hungarian folk costumes, pants, vests, jackets.

20230923_113121a.jpg

There's an army uniform on the photo above, which is also specific to Hungarian army.

The Order of Vitéz (Hungarian: Vitézi Rend; frequently spelled in English as 'Vitez') is a Hungarian order of merit which was founded in 1920. It was awarded as a state honour from 1920 to 1944, and continues as a semi-independent order of chivalry under Captain General vitéz József Károly von Habsburg, head of the Palatinal branch of the House of Habsburg. source

20230923_113131a.jpg

That is the Vitéz uniform. These days it is worn at official parades and festive events only, otherwise it's not in use. Imagine going on the field with such a uniform :)

20230923_113518a.jpg

These were genuine leather products. There was no live demonstration here, but I'm going to show you one soon.

20230923_113532a.jpg

Those sandals look tempting, but I don't know if I could wear those. I had a pair when I was a teenager and loved them. Looking at the bags, I could pick one, although the majority is not my style. These are not cheap though. Leather is expensive, but at least you have a product to wear for a good few years.

20230923_113528a.jpg

I took a quick photo of this lady in that nice folk costume. She was speaking Hungarian, but don't know which part of the world she represented as I've never seen that folk costume before. Not that I know them all though :)

20230923_113600a.jpg

There were a lot of goodies on that table. I love these and would be happy to buy some, but what stops me is the price (not cheap at all) and their weight. I'm used to fine porcelain and these are heavy :) But I'm going to buy a big pot with a lid for stuffed cabbage.

20230923_114644a.jpg

These were handmade boots and shoes, specific to Hungarian fold wear.

20230923_114659a.jpg

The man was making shoes by hand. There are not many left in this industry as mass production is more profitable and the costs of making handmade shoes are not something many can afford or are willing to pay. However, these traditional shoes, boots can't be bought just anywhere.

20230923_114732a.jpg

I'm not entirely sure, but I think these nice ladies were from Hungary. (After checking the photos below, turns out they are from a Transylvanian village, called Barcaság (Țara Bârsei in Romanian). As you can see, when the lady saw me preparing to take a photos, she smiled at the camera. There was no protest against photos here. She showed me around politely as well.

20230923_114710a.jpg

20230923_114715a.jpg

20230923_114741(0)a.jpg

They mainly had cross stitched products and some ceramics on this table. Beautiful work though.

20230923_114759a.jpg

Crocheted jewellery is becoming popular, I see these items more and more often. I hope they can sell them too.

20230923_114806a.jpg

And this is where things get interesting. Do you see those big eggs? 👀

20230923_114814a.jpg

Those are real eggshells, made like lace. Have you ever seen such thing? Imagine the work and the risk such a work involves. Eggshells are extremely fragile, so you need a lot of practice to not break them. The big ones are ostrich eggs, the small ones are chicken eggs.

20230923_114814a1.jpg

20230923_114814a2.jpg

These are two cropped photos for you to see them from close. These are not cheap, the small ones were at 20€ and the big ones were at 20€.

20230923_114819a.jpg

20230923_114825a.jpg

And those red eggs are the traditional Hungarian Easter eggs.

20230923_114836a.jpg

I love these eggs, can't ever stop admiring them. A few years ago I had an attempt with my nice, we wanted to try out the technique and failed miserably 😄

20230923_114840a.jpg

These were cheaper as they were at 2€. However, to buy a basket of eggs, you had to spend at least 20€.

I hope you could find something nice you like today. Let me know in a comment.

I love those types of markets where you can find unique and handmade things, I liked the cross stitch table, there were very beautiful things to buy. Greetings.

I have been to the Dracula castle a few years ago and the Yoga school I am attending now, has its origins in Romania. Are you Romanian? :D

Your right there aren't many shoes made by hand. I've heard of shoemakers back before my time. I don't know of anyone who is in this profession. Reminds me of blacksmiths that use to be in every town, there fading in the 21st Century.

The eggs are pretty cool looking. The red ones would be cool to have out at Christmas or Easter time in a basket how they have displayed. As far as buying I'd be too afraid they would end up broken someway unless there a lot less fragile this way.

I'll tell you a secret 😉
There was a girl from Bulgaria I think, back on the legacy chain, who was making shoes. I remember she posted about a pair of red shoes, I loved them. Unfortunately she quit. Now we have one or two Nigerian shoemakers.

Next time I'm going to post photos of a blacksmith.

The eggs are fragile but I'll tell you another secret. There are crafters selling wooden eggs, just like these 😄😆. I bought a few for my Easter table and look amazing 😅 Those will never break.

(Edited)

I can imagine through out the globe there are still some making shoes by hand. Here in the States a lot of the Amish make things by hand just don't know if they do shoes as well.

I look forward to reading about blacksmithing. There trade is so useful. My father went to one often when I was a kid.

Id totally buy some wooden eggs are they expensive like the egg shell ones?

No, the wooden eggs are cheaper. I think I bought them at 1.5€ or something.

I think there are shoemakers here but people prefer these ready made ones. It's better to try on your shoes right away, then wait for something that you won't like in the end.

That is an art - carving the eggshells.

I gave up on colouring the Easter eggs, there is no colour for them here in Spain, and although I know that I can use onion peel, I think I am just too lazy for that 😒

It is an art indeed, a special art and you need more talent I think as you're working with a highly fragile raw material.

Oh no! There's no such thing as giving up on Easter eggs. You can buy some when you're traveling, to have at Easter as those are not expiring soon. Plus you can use onion peels, like me. It's easy, ecological, healthy and nice.

There's no such thing as giving up on Easter eggs

😂

When my son was smaller we used to decorate them, using onion peel as colour and with little flowers and grass as decorative details. :)

I have always been passionate about things from the past... cities, societies, music and clothing. Seeing these typical Hungarian costumes has been fascinating, uniforms, vests... I have been enthralled with your photos for at least 10 minutes 😍

You know what would be very interesting? Do a photo shoot with these uniforms and suits ♥️ It would be a nice theme 😊

I loved everything, the photos, the crafts, what you wrote. What a good job my friend @erikah 😍

Sorry for the long comment 🙈 Hugs and kisses for you 🤗😘

Then we have something in common, as I've been passionate too, that's why I'm posting so much about culture, history, traditions, architecture 😀 And I'm happy to read that you liked this post.

Maybe I can fulfill your dream one day, if I find a festival, where these folk costumes and uniforms are many. Most likely there will be next year as the festival season is kind of over, probably there are a couple left, but knowing what you'd like, I can plan ahead next year 😉

Thanks for the lovely comment and don't apologize for the length of the comment, just write what you feel like and Ill be happy.

Hugs and kisses from me too 😘🤗 and don't forget to have a good laugh 😂

If I'd see some of these costumes randomly on the internet, I wouldn't guess they are actually in a fair from Transylvania, lol 😆

I always find hand made craft soothing. Even though they are expensive. They tend to be beautiful and colorful. Artistic in a way too.

Whenever I hear Transylvania I think of Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Dracula who gave rise to the legend of Count Dracula, but a country is known for its culture, its food and its crafts and the work of these costumes is really beautiful, the work of the leather and The meticulous work of the egg shells is impressive, I loved this article and your photos.

How beautiful everything 🥰.
The sandals are identical 😲 to the ones you can find in any artisan fair in our country, it's a pity I don't have pictures of any to send you. Thanks for sharing, happy day.
