How Much Does Your Passport Worth? The Henley Passport Index

avatar

The other day I was browsing the internet to catch up with the latest news and bumped into an interesting article, that made me think of how lucky or unlucky we can be, depending on where we live.

The Henley Passport Index

The article is called The world's most powerful passports for 2022, an interesting article to read and also an eye opener, or a reason for heart ache for many, depending on where you are based.

I love traveling (who doesn't?) and restrictions always makes me sad, and because I grew up in a period when international travel was only a dream, I can highly appreciate what I have now. However, not everyone is in a good situation.

Just as you don't choose your parents, you don't choose your country of origin either. When you are born, you are given citizenship of your birth country, exception from this rule is when your parents are not citizens. Obviously the latter matter is more complex, each case is different but usually that's how it is.

CNN Travel has published the list of the best and the worst passports for 2022. The situation changes from year to year and with it the list is changing too. This is the first time I came across this list, so I don't know if my countries have changed their position on the list this year, but their current ranking is good enough for me, I have no reason to complain.

The Henley Passport Index uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to compile its rankings.

"Passports and visas are among the most important instruments impacting on social inequality worldwide as they determine opportunities for global mobility," Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, chairman of Henley & Partners, said in a statement. source

If you're reading my post I suppose you want to check where your country is situating on the list, so here it is the LINK. Some of you may be disappointed to see the result, or you already knew approximately where your country would be situating.

The Present

The painful truth is you need a passport to travel and in many cases you need a visa as well, which may not be given easily, especially these days, when many countries are facing economical difficulties and can hardly make ends meet for their citizens, let alone allow foreigners in the country, that may not be able to support themselves.

Getting a second passport is far from easy. You need to wait from 5 to 7 years, depending on the law in the country of your choice and have to meet some tough conditions.

The most difficult obstacle in ones way is to get a job that guarantees enough income to be able to pay the bills and save for rainy dais. Having a job and enough money to support yourself and your family is a must, no matter how angry it makes you feel. None of the countries want to import people who want to live on government handouts.

The Future

Today I saw in the news that Iran is taking steps towards adopting crypto.

Iran’s central bank and the country’s Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade have agreed to a deal that will enable local merchants to begin using cryptocurrencies for foreign trade settlements, according to local media reports. source

If you're not familiar with Iran's case, the country was banned by SWIFT, the global provider of secure financial messaging services in 2014 or so, which means the country can not use international bank services.

In a simpler language, there's no credit or debit card issued by Iran, that you can use for international payments as no Iranian payment is processed by SWIFT. That goes for individuals and companies as well.

For some time now it has been obvious that the only way out of this messy situation is crypto, which is not controlled by any authority. This new regulation is not going to solve Iran's problems in a day, but it's a step forward, which most likely will be followed by new steps towards change.

Right now Iran is 101th on the Henley Passport Index list and an Iranian passport would grant you visa free access in 42 countries, possibly none of them are where Iranian would move.

image.png
source

Iran is just an example as there was the news about crypto, but there are many countries in the same situation.

image.png

I know we have a lot of users from Nigeria, where the situation is not exactly one you want to be in and many are ready to move to another country if possible. Nigerians are free to travel to 45 countries without a visa, but I suppose their dream destination is not on that list.

However, not every country is so rigorous with handing out citizenship. If you are wealthy (not well off), you can get a Maltese citizenship in a year, it is not impossible. Malta is a very small country and it's obvious they don't want people who can't help the country. They want people with money.

I'm hoping things can change in a few years and we will see more countries changing their adoption policy. Money will still be an issue, meaning those without funds will be having a hard time getting a visa or citizenship, but I hope crypto will count as well. Adopting crypto would open some gates for many.

Till then, we have to make the most of our time, learn, work hard and accumulate, to have a nice stake in case we want to move somewhere else, where a visa is needed, or get another citizenship (passport). No need to give up your dream.

Thanks for this article. I have been wondering for some time about this chart and finally I got it.
I am lucky that I have an Italian passport.
Anyway, I expected also Iran to be in the worst passports area. A friend of mine has an iranian girlfriend and told me that if they were going to Iran, for 5 years they would have had problems entering USA.

I'm glad you find it useful. Well, your Italian passport puts you in a very good position.

About Iran, there's also a political aspect, that is hard to bypass. There are countries that will not allow you in, no matter how much money you have, if you're coming from a not so friendly territory. This is not easy.

Yes, this time being Italy comes useful.
Yeah, I see your point. And yes, some countries will be a damnation for someone, because they will issue big prejudices upon them.
I knew some Kyrgyz guys that could not go into the USA if they did not have a special document, that they had to pay to request it without being sure of getting it.
Sometimes I feel that chatting over social networks, trading online, making business from home make us among the most lucky people on Earth and in many countries big obstacles are on the way to different forms of freedom.

I couldn't agree more. We have a huge advantage many countries don't have. Imagine there are countries where the internet is still censored. You can't access different sites, services and someone is constantly watching. That must be terrible.

The Nigeria passport doesn't make the holder feel important.like you said of the 45 countries we can travel visa free,i doubt there's a single Nigeria who would want to go to any of those on a normal day

That is unfortunately true. I don't know those countries very well, but I suppose most would Nigerians would leave the continent.

To travel outside Nigeria, Nigerian citizens receive Nigerian passports. New Nigerian passport applications require electronic passports. In addition to the e-passport, a standard electronic passport is also referred to as an "official" passport, depending on the type.

Yeah, I do feel lucky to be at number 7. Even without a passport I can go to so many places just with my National ID. Want a funny story about that? As I enter Montenegro years ago on my motorcycle the guy at the border asks for my documents. I give him my ID and he says "when does this expire?". I say "it's a national ID it doesn't expire". So he goes "And you're gonna stay young like this?" pointing at my picture 😄

I can also travel to EU member countries with my ID.

About that story, let me tell you another one, besides how stupid is to not put an expiration date to the ID. 🙂 No offense as it's not your fault.

Turns out driving licenses in Germany also never expire, which is just as stupid as your ID 😂

Two years ago we had some guests from Germany and the woman, around 55 now or so, showed us her driving license, that was issued when she was 18. How stupid is that? She has changed a bit since than, not to mention that license was a piece of paper, without any security element added.

I'm not an expert, but with digitization developing so fast, things will change soon.

I think they do expire there but not before your late 60s early 70s or so (just like here). I posted about changing my driving license not too long ago and now the Greek state will offer a digital one that you can have on your phone. I did it voluntarily, I could keep the same for many more years with a picture from my late teens :)

The difference here is that when your driving license expires, which is every 10 years till you are 70 I believe, you need a medical examination. Fail that and you get no driving license. It sounds tough but I agree with it.

We need medical exams too but not every 10 years. After 68 I think we must pass them every 2-3 years. Don't wanna look at it cause I'm not close and I don't wanna think about it now :)

It is already as you can't travel without a green pass, but you don't have to go far as there are shopping malls, museums where it is already needed.

I was surprised to see Japan and Singapore as the number 1, pretty cool. I thought the US would be higher but not too shocking being top 5. Crypto will definitely help countries like Iran and I think that scares the money people! They’ve worked so hard to sanction places like Iran, it’s great to get around that with crypto!

Yes, it's very common that US citizens expect their country to be first on every list, so no worries, you're not the only one :)

I agree, crypto will change a lot of things, just a little more time is needed.

Oh my, I know without looking that our passport isn't "powerful" enough but not worst too haha. Must be nice to have double passports... 🤔 If only traveling wasn't so expensive. 😅

Sorry to hear your passport is not powerful enough. Must be tough. Having two passport is a good thing but only if those are good though 😁

However, I have no reason to complain. One of mine is eight on the list, can't ask for more can I?
