In The Drift Of Time - A Different Form Of Art

avatar

This week I had the occasion to see something really unique. I love art, love looking at what other people have created and the more rare, the better. Painting on different mediums is not rare, paper, canvas, wood, metal or glass are obvious and common choices, but creating a painting on textile is not so common. It is a totally different type of art as there's no medium to paint on, you have to create the medium.

In The Drift Of Time 2.jpg

Come with me to show you what I saw at the exhibition called "In The Drift Of Time", that can be visited at the Bernády cultural center in Targu Mureș, which is very close to the city center and the town hall. Rozália Kozma's exhibition can be visited between April 28 and May 17 this year and it's free.

Looking at the exhibition's poster already made one curious.

This work is called "The Code" and it was finished in 2019. It is pretty mysterious as you can see en eye in details, a brain from medical point of view, an ancient drawing and another box that I have no idea what is it. I was standing in front of it and was thinking how much talent you need to recreate this with fibers. This is weaved, so the artist must have had a sample worked out on paper I suppose. It's marvelous in any case.

In The Drift Of Time (2021), this piece gives the title of the exhibition and it is even more marvelous than the previous one as it features four portraits. The artist has all my respect, honestly. I can hardly do a portrait on paper, and even that would be based on a tutorial video, so this is a masterpiece if you ask me.

Signs, Meanings (2004) is a 6m long piece and also a mysterious one.

If you have a closer look, the piece in the middle, you can see a man and a woman.

I'll leave this one to your imagination.

Here's a few close-ups to show you how complex the work is. It's not just weaving.

Metamorphosis (2007)

Prelude (2010)

The main reason for visiting the exhibition was to see what one can create with yearn and different textiles. I can't say I have any talent with these mediums, I mean I've learned to sew, I know knitting and crocheting but more than that ... I can't do anything.

20220503_114215a.jpg

I was struggling with this one as it was framed, with a glass top and the light was working against me, but I hope you can see from the photo above, that it's a mixed one. It's painted paper with fibers added.

Dimensions (2020)

This seems to be the textile version of the previous work.

The Spirit Of The Bolyai's (2022) - This is the latest work of the artist, finished this year and a very important one, featuring the two greatest mathematicians of Targu Mures, Farkas Bolyai father and János Bolyai son. The most prestigious school in the city is wearing their name.

Looking at the portraits, I have no word to describe the work. I was thinking how much precision you need and how careful you have to select the colors, for those portraits to look like the people you want to feature. Not to mention the test across the work as that is also important. What none of the works says is how much time went into them. Months? Years?

This is another very interesting composition, that is called Eyes, Viewpoints (2007).

As I mentioned above, I went to see the exhibition to get some inspiration that can give me the energy to start creating something. When I looked at this composition for example, I thought it's not so complicated, yet not many or no one has thought about creating something similar. If you have a little experience in needlework, you know how these eyes have been made, but coming up with the idea is not so easy.

In Memoriam Liszt Ferenc (2011) As the title says, this piece is commemoration of the most famous Hungarian composer, pianist, Franz Liszt.

This exhibition took me to another world I had no idea it exists, honestly. I've seen other textile exhibitions, one quite recently, but that was very different. This is going to be an inspiration for me and I hope it lasts till the summer is over. If not, I can always look back and read this post, to get me inspired.

Go ahead, pick your favorite piece :)

Wow, how many wonderful piece of art! The "Signs, Meanings (2004)" is super! I've seen some fiber pieces in the past and I know it's a complex way to create pieces, but they are so beautiful and I love how different fibers works on them. Fantastic exhibition!
