Lunch At Greweln Inn

At the beginning of September, when the weather was just perfect for a good excursion, I had the occasion to go to another medieval city in Transylvania, called Mediaș, which is the second biggest city in Sibiu county, Romania. Mediaș is a small city with only 47000 inhabitants, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to see there, on the contrary. I'm going to show you what the city has to offer soon, but right now I'd like to invite you to a place that worth visiting if you're in the area.

The place is called Greweln and it's the green part of the city. It's a hill covered with woods, not far from the city center and there's an inn and a restaurant that attracts tourists and locals especially in weekends.

How To Get There

There's a road opposite to the local football stadium, that takes you there. You can drive or you can take a nice walk on this pedestrian road through the woods. It takes you about 10 minutes to get there.

Or you can ride your bike as the pedestrian road is in a good condition for that.

It's not the first time I've visited the place, I've been here before but this time I was surprised to see there are benches and bins, plus a part of the road is paved with cobble stones. This was a very good step towards attracting people to visit the place.

Another advantage you have here is the road that can be used as running track. These old and tall trees can guarantee you a nice time, a cooler temperature than you can get under the sun.

There's this little bridge that connects the main road with the pedestrian road. It's a lovely bridge, too bad the creek bed is quite neglected.

Once you get out of the woods, you'll see a big playground for kids, which is a must for families with small kids. There's plenty of space here for both kids and adults to play in open air.

Now that the covid-19 pandemic has redesigned our life, there's not much going on here, but in normal conditions festivals are held here as the place is big enough to host those interested in folk music, art and nice culinary events. This year however all the events have been cancelled.

This wooden barrel shaped kiosk is usually used during summer to sell different products and it looks good as it makes it more nature friendly. At the time of our visit it was closed, obviously.

The Inn

This is the entrance to the restaurant. As you can see, the whole place was already decorated with autumn flowers and pumpkins.

The Restaurant

Needless to say the restaurant was closed as well, you could only enter to go to the restroom and that's all. On my way there I was able to take a few photos and now I'm happy I did as can show you how wonderful it is.

I love how the furniture and the logs are made of wood, painted dark brown. It's the perfect color combination I believe for this type of restaurant.

Food

They are offering a great variety of dishes, both traditional and well known ones, plus vegan food as well. So no matter what you're looking for, what's your food preference, you will find something that suits your needs.

At the time of our visit, they were hosting a charity event, which meant they had a few dishes you can choose from and the income was donated to kids and elderly people.

What you see on the photo above was the place where they were cooking pork knuckle with beans and some other dishes.

When we set down to our table, we were told it takes approximately one hour to get served as the terraces were full and food is cooked upon orders. This may be frustrating for some but I prefer to wait and get fresh food, rather than be served rewarmed, old food.

This is their most famous dish and this is why we went there basically. It's pork escalope with fried potatoes, garlic and cheese. What do you think? 😁

And here it is, the so called borzeasca, that derives from the Hungarian borzoska which means unkempt in English. Why is it called like that? Because the pork escalope is fried in a grated potato coat and sprinkled with grated cheese, looks like an uncombed hair on a bad hair day.

What you can see on my plate is a very large portion, it has 300g meat, 150g potatoes, plus the cheese. I could only eat half and took the other half home. Needless to say it was heavenly good.

For dessert we had our eyes on the cheese dumplings with sour cream and berry jam as we knew it's good.

This was a bit different from what we had at Albota. At Albota we got one big dumpling and a small one on the top, while here they were serving three of the same size.

If I were to compare the two, I'd say both were excellent, but the one at Albota was a bit better.

This is the crème brûlée, which is also a famous dessert, however, I was told this wasn't excellent.

And here it is one of my favorite drinks, mojito, what else?

I've heard the charity day was a success and they were able to donate a considerable amount of money to those in need. It was worth waiting an hour. We were pleased with the food and the place, it's definitely one you should visit if you're in the area. you take a nice walk and enjoy nature while enjoying good food. Too bad this restaurant, just like many others, will be closed soon due to the pandemic.

Ha!!! Love the name borzeasca!! It looks really good, but so heavy with the chips as well, no wonder you couldn't finish it. I reckon I'd get through about 1/3 of it. The creme brulee looks a bit odd, the ones we have in UK are like set custard, that one looks like a cake... Other than that, the place looks great, plonked in the middle of the woods.

I neglected to mention how unhealthy the borzeasca is, but I only eat such things a few times a year, so it was ok. You're right, the portion is not for our stomach. Next time I'm going to try something else.
