Memorial House Of Stephan Ludwig Roth
Last month was exceptional for me as while I was spending time in Mediaș, I tried to visit as many historical places as possible and take photos so I can then share with you and pin my post to the map for those who are looking to see what they can visit once in this medieval Transylvanian city.
One of the places I always wanted to visit was the memorial house of Stephan Ludwig Roth, because it is situated on a historical street, full of nice old houses, the memorial house has a plaque that lets you know what the house represents.
Stephan Ludwig Roth (24 November 1796 – 11 May 1849) was a Transylvanian Saxon intellectual, teacher, pedagogue and Lutheran pastor. source
He had a colorful life and was court-martialed for high treason against Hungary and executed on May 11, 1849. You can read more about his life here.
The memorial house was part of the tour offered for free for visitors, during the night of the museums, so I knew it's the chance to finally visit it.
How To Get There
The memorial house is situated on the Johannes Honterus street no. 10, very close to the medieval city center and the St. Margaret church. It is open between 01 June and 31 August, between Tuesday and Friday from 9am to 5pm and between Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm. The ticket has a symbolic price of $1 for adults and $0.5 for kids.
The Memorial House
This is the house in which Stephan Ludwig Roth was living between 1821 – 1837 and this was the period in which Roth worked as a professor in Mediaș. The house consists of three rooms. Right at the entrance there are two statues of Roth.
The purpose of the exhibition is not only to show visitors the house Roth was living in, but also to make people aware of his activity.
This is the living room, which looks pretty empty, compared to what rooms in those days looked like, but trust me, it has some interesting pieces.
The chair and the books in the photo above the last one are not a puzzle, but looking at the one above, you may be wondering what on earth is that. Well, fasten your seat belts as this was his tool to warm the bed. I stayed there for two minutes wondering about how that worked, but could not figure it out. Something hot must be placed inside that thing but what?
Another interesting piece, an inlaid cabinet, which must have costed a fortune back then. I love these as are real works of arts, but I could never have one in my house :)
His firearm, which compared to what we have nowadays, looks like a bad joke, or something from the beginning of humanity.
This was another interesting piece I liked a lot. It's a heating device, that was functioning with wood and it is made of porcelain, which must have costed a fortune. It looks very interesting but from efficiency point of view, I don't know how much heat it could guarantee.
The third room was dedicated to photos, drawings and artifacts.
A photography of his monument in Medias, although I have no idea where it can be.
Two important places in Roth's life. The first one is the old city center of Cluj-Napoca, the place where he was caught and below the place where he was executed.
The scene of his arrest.
These were the clothes he was wearing when he was executed.
A copy of the letter he wrote to his children, before he was executed.
The truth is I was expecting much more but I suppose this is what was left of his belongings.
