My Strange Time Capsule

Another weekend is coming soon and I decided to participate in Galen's weekend engagement challenge again. There are four prompts this time, you can choose whichever you like and I most likely have chosen the strangest one 😁. For me this is the most interesting one though. Check it out and join if you like.

Time capsule
You have the opportunity to leave three of your personal items in a time capsule to be buried then dug up in two hundred years from today. What do you put in there and why? How do you feel people of the future will interpret your items? Answer in at least 300 words and use photos you personally took if possible. source

Leaving something behind for future generations is not new. People have been doing it for ages, literally. Egyptian Pharaohs were buried with their money, favorite pets, valuables and even servants. Back in those days they believed in afterlife and thought they need all those items for their next life, which we know has not happened yet.

Closer to our days there have been several cases when archeologists or simple construction workers have discovered time capsules in walls or buried underground. I saw one recently, in November 2021 to be precise, a capsule that dates back to 1908 and was discovered accidentally, during some renovation works in a high school of Targu Mures.

IMG_20211126_101804a.jpg

This was the marble box the capsule was in, a very nice, stylish one, carved and decorated in accordance with those times. At the time of my visit, the actual metal capsule was at the archeology section of the museum, specialists were working on preserving the content of it.

What was in the time capsule? Local newspapers, coins, manuscripts, these are the items you usually find in most of them and these were the items found in that specific capsule too. It's always interesting to read about those times when the capsule was buried, it is like a trip back in time.

IMG_20211126_101840a.jpg

The capsule on the photos is now 114 years old, but Galen said ours would be dug up in two hundred years from today.

What are the 3 personal items I would put in the capsule? It's a very good question and the answer is not easy at all. However, after some thinking I decided to go with the followings and I'm going to tell you why. The order is random, does not represent the importance of the items.

A Diary

This may come as a surprise to many as I, Erika, am not important, have never been and never will be important. I'm just a small drop in the big ocean, an insignificant one, who has never done anything to be remembered for. So the diary would not be about my personal life, but about what life is like in 2023 and more specifically the financial, economical life of the world. I would write a detailed study, documenting the evolution of money and financial systems to show where we started, where we are now and let those who will open the capsule draw the conclusions about the rest.

We're at a crucial point in humanity's life, where the obsolete financial system is about to be replaced with a new one. A new financial foundation has been created, to separate money from politics. Money should not be tied to the state or politics for the obvious reason. Managing money has been and it is being abused in all sorts of ways today, which is the reason why we are in this terrible situation right now.

Crypto is here to stop money printing, take control out of governments hand and replace the old obsolete financial system. This is a process that takes time, quite a lot of time actually, but I'm confident it is the right way to a new financial system.

I would put together a detailed study about inflation, about where crypto adoption stands right now, to let future generations know how things were standing in 2023.

They say 1USD will always be 1USD, which is true, but the purchasing power of the U.S. Dollar has decreased drastically over the years.

Purchasing-Power-of-the-U.webp
source

If you look back in time, it is clearly visible that the U.S. Dollar is on a slippery slope for the last 110 years and there seems to be no stopping.

I would also write a few things that I find interesting, about art for example. Who are the contemporary artists today, to see if they will be remembered and valued in 200 years, like we value Michelangelo, Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, Rodin and the Strauss family today.

Paper Bills And Coins

This is usually what capsules contain, to show future generations what state currency looked like, but this time these paper bills and coins will have a more significant role. In 200 years I'm expecting physical currency to disappear, which makes these coins and paper notes rarities and totally worthless as currency.

It would be interesting to know if these coins and bills will be valuable as collectibles though. I could make someone rich by stashing a few dollars in the capsule :)

My Phone

This is a funny one for several reasons. You can imagine my phone is not a special one, it's not even a high end iPhone that worth a lot because it is customized and has diamond cover or something. Yet, I want to include it in the capsule.

In 200 years communication most likely will be done without devices, something similar we see now in science fiction movies, so no one will know how to use the phone, but I think it will be interesting for them to look at it and know where technology was standing regarding telecommunication in 2023.

However, we already live in the era of digitization, so there's a chance that what I may be writing in my diary would be already known. Artworks, manuscripts are all scanned or in a process to be scanned, to be preserved in digital form for the future.

What about you? What would you put in a time capsule?

@erikah i must confess you are a good writer, i have been following your post for a while and anytime i read them i get to learn alot, funny how i'd have to stop mid way to check google for more information😁.

This may come as a surprise to many as I, Erika, am not important, have never been and never will be important. I'm just a small drop in the big ocean, an insignificant one, who has never done anything to be remembered for.

This was a twist, i was expecting the diary would contain things about yourself but you just made me see everything in a different light.

Thanks for always writing good contents, you sort of inspires us newbies to do better🙂

"The phone is an excellent choice." 👍

Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, 200 years from now it would be a relic. It would impress many and perhaps end up as a museum exhibit.

¡¡¡¡¡How I'm glad for this initiative!!!!! 😃👍

I was thinking maybe in 200 years museums will be virtual. Like with using a VR set 😂 who knows?

Greetings @erikah , three very interesting objects, I like the idea of the diary to see in 200 years, a before and after of the world economy. I think that fiat money will disappear and eventually there will be no bills that you want to keep. That capsule of yours, has a historical approach so that they can see the evolution both financially and technologically. A pleasure to read you

Hello there. Fiat will disappear for sure. Let's see which currency is going to take over, crypto or CBDC. I hope it will be crypto.

I hope it will also be crypto where everything is decentralized.

What you chose to keep for the future generation is nice. 2023 is a remarkable year in the history of our generation. Honestly, future generation should know of it, learn from it so as to avoid repeating any bad step we took. Interesting!

Greetings friend, the selection seemed good to me, imagine knowing in 200 years what inflation was like, at that time, on the other hand people will have accommodation that will serve for people who are collectors, and in turn they will have in their hands how the communication system through telephones, will be historic

If they find my capsule, then yes. Let's hope there will be no inflation by then, and the phone will be some strange device.

I thought you won't add your phone to the list. I saw this prompt by @galenkp and the first thing that came to my mind was my phone. In 200 years from now, those scientist or archeologist would be thrilled to find a mobile device in a time capsule.

Erika this magnifies the selection of your personal things to put in the capsule, add a photo of yourself as you are currently it would be great if whoever digs it up says wowwwwwwww what a beautiful woman she lived on the date indicated in the diary, and that she was very advanced for the time because she used that gadget (cell phone). Just like the works that you share with us on your itinerant visits to the museums.

To add a photo of mine? Never in a million years!

she was very advanced for the time because she used that gadget (cell phone).

There's a huge chance they will not even know what is is, so I don't think so :)

Amazing finds for the next 200 years. If those paper bills will be the last one printed then maybe it will be worth something as collectible.

Hello @erikah I was delighted to read so many barbarities ha,ha,ha,ha. Well I don't think that money is of great importance in all the years that will pass ha,ha,ha,ha when opening the capsule. Sincerely our friend @galenkp has a brilliant mind. Hey, watch out with the data you leave in the cell phone, delete my contact before leaving that in the capsule, it will be that they will end with the generations of contacts that you have registered. Well, I really had a lot of fun reading it. Maybe you are an economist or you are broke ha,ha,ha,ha.

The basic rule, when you're giving your phone out of your hands is to wipe it clean. No worries, I have never had your details, so there's nothing to be afraid of. And yes, I am an economist, but I'm not broke.

I loved your post.

How you have spun the information of the discoveries of arks in antiquity and the objects you have included.

The part about the diary and the evolution of coins to cryptocurrencies fascinated me a lot.

Have a nice weekend

I've also heard good news that banknotes or coins from the past will be very expensive if we sell them now because they are very rare, and it seems I also want to have a classic item to collect 😊

Certain collectibles have a good price but not everything. It depends on a lot of factors and rarity is one of them. Who knows, maybe our coins are going to be rare some day.

That's right, I hope we are always happy 😊

I do hope that in 200 years people look back and think, wow - how did they ever survive with such a corrupt and broken financial system. Its a long journey ahead of us but hope we don't have to wait 200 years! I hope the change is something I can see in my life time.

Those coins in the future will be worth a few crypto tokens!

It depends. Some counties are going to make progress, while others are already going backwards as kleptocracy is still very strong. So who knows if we get to experience the change, or only the future generations.

That's the problem, the current economic environment supports the wealthier getting even wealthier by using their extractive policies that they've been using since colonial days. Its hard to break the cycle.
