Simple Lentil Pottage

It's been ages since I posted a recipe on Hive, so it was just about time to bring something new. I say new because the recipe I'm about to post is new to me. Actually it's my own recipe that I invented today. You know how it is, fake it till you make it, right? Ok, jokes aside, I just put together a few ingredients and hoped to get a tasty dish, which I did at the end.

Lentil is not an ingredients I often use. If I'm to be honest, I think I only cooked lentils once, so you can imagine I was a bit stressed. So why I decided to cook lentil, you may ask. The answer is simple. It is recommended for gallbladder diet as a very good source of fiber. The smart thing to do would have been to incorporate it into my diet a long time ago, but that has never happened. As time passes and my chances to have more gallbladder problems grow, I think it's wise to do it now, better than later.

Fair warning, this dish is for health reasons and not because it looks good.

I bought 1 kg of lentils sometime in September last year, which was sitting in my pantry ever since. Procrastinating is usually not my thing, but when it comes to unknown territory regarding cooking, it may become my thing. Today I thought it was time to find a recipe and finally try the lentils out. So here's my own, fake it till you make it recipe.

20240402_101632a.jpg

Ingredients:

  • 350g green lentil,
  • 3 big carrots,
  • 1 big onion,
  • few garlic cloves,
  • 1/4 red bell pepper,
  • 1 tsp salt,
  • pinch of pepper,
  • 2 tsp red paprika powder,
  • 3 tbsp olive oil,
  • 2 big bay leaves (I had many small ones),
  • 1 tsp turmeric,
  • 2 tbsp all purpose flour,
  • 100ml milk
  • 1 egg
  • toast.

The selection of the vegetables is a personal choice, based on what I had at home and what other recipes were mentioning. But you don't have to limit yourself to these ingredients. You can also choose potato, or parsley, or baby spinach or what you like.

20240402_101939a.jpg

Method:

Put the chopped onions, sliced carrots, chopped red paprika into a large pan. Add oil, bring to the boil, then simmer for a few minutes, stirring all the time, to avoid sticking.

After that, add the lentils, water to cover and the spices. Cover with a lid and cook till the ingredients are tender. Add more water if needed.

When the vegetables are tender, mix the flour with milk and add to the pottage. Mix and stir while cooking for another 5 minutes or so. Season if needed.

I decided to serve it with a sunny egg and toast, but you can have it as it is.

The best thing about this recipe is that you can make it a soup as well, if you want. You only need to add more water and you get a delicious soup with the same flavor.

I used green lentil because that's what I bought, but there are other types of lentils, so you can use what you get. I haven't tried any of the others (I don't know what kind of lentil was that I first tried, to be honest), so it may taste different, I don't know, but I'll let you know next time if I buy a different type.

This is one version of lentil pottage, but I'm planning to experiment and create more versions by using different vegetables.

Fun fact, lentil in Hungary is a dish for the 1st of January. Legend has it, that if you eat lentils, or beans or peas (the idea is to have many small pieces), then you'll become rich. I've never had lentil on the 1st day of the year though :D It's not traditional here.

Lentils are one of my main ingredients when it comes to having proteins in my diet (I have been lacto-vegetarian since I was 25 years old)... And looking at this recipe of yours has made me remember that I haven't had lunch and it's already past time! ... Thanks for that!... ;)

Excellent and easy recipe article, well described step-by-step and with excellent photos for the process and results!...

I'm glad my post was a reminder for you to have lunch :) And I'm also glad you like it. You can adjust it to your needs, replace the ingredients you don't eat with something similar.

Have a nice day my dear friend!

How funny that I found that I have something in common with you by reading a cooking blog.

I cooked lentils only once. I made a cream soup. Pretty good...

Your recipe is new to me and I'm referring to the "milk and flour part". I'm thinking of trying it myself.

I learned from a Turkish chef that orange lentils are the best.

P.S. I have something else in common with you—gallbladder problems. I had an ultrasound today.

Cream soup is also good, I know there are lots of recipes on the internet. Maybe I'll try it out once, but make it only half creamy :)

You can use sour cream, instead of milk and flour, or whipping cream, but I find whipping cream too heavy for my gallbladder and if you had an ultrasound, then you should not use it either.

I hope everything is ok with your gallbladder :)

I prefer half-creamy too. Even if it is not indicated for the gallbladder, we frequently use sour cream. My wife is from Ardeal. My gallbladder is relatively fine but it has an irregular shape or position, since birth, and I often have pains that the doctor told me to get used to.

It's always good to innovate, this recipe that you share with us is something totally different to what you normally share with us, but just like in the other posts, in this one you also stand out hehe.

I usually eat lentils very often, I could say that at least here in my house it is prepared once a week and I always enjoy it when it is prepared, there are times when I have wanted to repeat my portion.

Taking into account what you said about your gallbladder problem, I'm glad you are taking action now and considering eating lentils more often from now on.

Regarding the ingredients you used, it is almost similar to how we prepare lentils in my house, there are only 2 differences, the first is that we add potatoes, the second difference and is the one that caught my attention is to add flour and milk in the preparation, that's new to me, but I can't help but want to try it.

Thanks for sharing this recipe with all of us @erikah, best regards!

Well, I'm trying to diversify my content. I love to cook and bake, but someone else has been cooking for me for the past months, so that's why I haven't shared any recipes.

Regarding the differences between my recipe and yours, I would have added potato too, but had none at home :D, maybe next time as it's a good idea. You can try out my version, I bet you'd like it.

Have a nice day!

I understand, that's why I hadn't seen a recipe-related post from you.

Potatoes are a good ingredient to add in the whole recipe.

I will try your version of preparation, I will surely like it.

Thank you once again for sharing this recipe and introducing me to a new version of a food that is almost always present in my home.

Have a nice one too!

Excellent recipe! Lentils are a simple dish full of health benefits. You can combine them with countless ingredients, make stews, soups, creams, fried, the variety is amazing.

What a curious tradition in Hungary, I didn't know it.

In Cuba lentils are consumed, but there are other legumes that are in the popular preference.

Thanks for sharing. 🤗

Thank you! It is indeed a simple recipe and the number of veggies you can use is endless.

What a curious tradition in Hungary, I didn't know it.

You would be amazed how many crazy habits are there, most of those for superstitious reasons.

Nice photograph especially the ingredients shot. Colorful ingredient shots always catch my eye. The finished dish looks good also. In the US at least the south, we eat black-eyed peas for good luck on New Years.

Lol, the pottage doesn't look good, but what can you do as that's what lentil looks like. Anyway, as I said at the beginning of my post, the end result counts, meaning the food must taste good, the rest is not important.

In the US at least the south, we eat black-eyed peas for good luck on New Years.

This is new to me but it makes sense because lentil dishes are eaten for the same reason.

This is the kind of meal that is very easy for me... I just throw it all in there and that's it. 😁

That looks appetizing!
