The Medieval City Center

avatar

Earlier this week I showed you the wall and the fortresses surrounding the medieval city center of Mediaș and today I'd like to show you the beauty that can be found inside the walls.

The Medieval City Center.jpg

As I mentioned in my previous post, the wall served defense purposes and was built around the city. As you come from the farmers market, you have to pass these old houses, that are in the way to the main square.

This street is made of old houses like you see on the photo. Almost all of them have wooden window shutters, some even have wooded shutter doors, beside the normal door.

In the background the St. Margaret Church, that is a very important tourist destination of the city and not only. When I was visiting, I saw a poster about the weekly organ concerts held in the church. I love organ concerts, so I may need to go back on a Monday and enjoy the music. Once I had the pleasure to enjoy an organ practice in one of the churches in Delft. It was fantastic, so whenever I have the chance to attend an organ concert, I don't miss it. However, an organ concert in a church is the real deal.

The ground floor of most buildings are rented out to businesses, which, unfortunately makes the whole neighborhood look very different.

20220513_112635a.jpg

A couple of years ago this square, with the fountain looked very nice. At one point there were tables outside, umbrellas and you could order drinks, while enjoying the fresh air created by the fountain. Now it looks like no mans land.

This is the Lutheran high school that is named after Stephan Ludwig Roth.

The building is more than 100 years old and the architecture is absolutely amazing. I suppose the door to that balcony is closed and the use of the balcony is out of the question, which is a shame as it's a lovely one.

20220513_120909a.jpg

Look at those steps, and imagine how many students used it over the 110 years the high school exists. Those are the original stone steps.

The statue of Stephan Ludvig Roth in front of the school.

The Johannes Honterus street is like an open air architectural museum to me and I think I'm not the only one who thinks that. This house is an absolute beauty from every point of view.

20220513_113022a.jpg

It's been recently renovated and looks like we're writing 1900 or even earlier than that. The color combination is perfect in my opinion which is rare and you'll see below why I say that.

20220513_112843a.jpg

I can imagine myself living in that white house, although I'm not sure how much comfort is there. But it looks cute.

20220513_113054a.jpg

This is the street that has most of these wonderful gates that I have been blogging about.

20220513_113229a.jpg

Memorial house of Hermann Kirchner (choir master) and Carl Martin Römer (high school professor).

20220513_113330a.jpg

Another impressive house is the Honterus House, which is a restaurant now.

20220513_113348a.jpg

Unfortunately I did not have time to go in, but I'd love to visit the inside as well one day and have lunch or dinner there.

And if you are thorough, you can find gems like this one for example. That little house looks ordinary, but it's not.

20220513_113745a.jpg

Here lived the prominent master mechanic, founder of the first local bicycle club (1894), charter member of the vocal group "Oktett" (1896), and promoter of various local theater and sports activities.

That was Johann Adolf Haltrich who lived between 1868 and 1957. These were the people paving the road of social life back in those days.

20220513_120556a.jpg

Last, but not least, this house which I love the most, especially for the architecture and the color combination.

Walking down this street is like a walk back in time. I can't help it but think how people who built these houses were living back then and what the interior of them looked like.

What beautiful architecture this town @erikah has, you can appreciate the love at the time of its creation in the details of the facades, which provide a lot of character and personality
I really like the details of the openings and the bright colors they use
Thank you very much for showing us this beautiful place.
enjoy the weekend

Thank you! Well, this is the old part of the city. The new part is far from being fascinating, so this is why I focused on these. Details are very important when it comes to architecture.

Have a nice weekend :)

The other day, we were talking with @leaky about windows and doors being the eyes of the houses. So many eyes here and all those wooden doors I like so much :))

Well, doors and windows are indeed the eyes of the house, that's why I love them, especially the old ones. I'm always taking a bunch of photos, wherever I go 😃

I love some photos you took here! Amazing some of them!

But I've got really nostalgic about this "Look at those steps, and imagine how many students used it over the 110 years the high school exists. Those are the original stone steps."

It's been some time and even more time since I first started school, first grade. And then the other year and other until we were out of the University. It feels like ages but I have in my mind those stone steps that you mentioned as well that we had in gimnazial school. And how many memories and laughs and cries. I feel old, I feel that life passes very quickly...I miss many things and moments from the childhood and sometimes I just wish to leave forever. Is just me with these thoughts? I love to be! LOL. I feel like laughing and crying in the same time 😂😭

Looks like I'm not the only one paying attention to worn stairs and think of the meaning 😃 Transylvania has a lot of old buildings with worn stairs :P

Yeah, school years, of all levels. Even the top ones, some of which were pretty tough, but still fun. I think we all miss things from the past especially because we know those years are gone forever and will never return. This is why we have to enjoy the present, every minute of it.

I do think of its meaning, always filled with memories and feelings as well.. Yesterday I've just seen this quote saying "today its gone forever"....I always get nostalgic when I'm deeply thinking about time, you know? I feel that the old we get, the more nostalgic it gets 😌

I loved the photograph of the stairs and your comment: "how many students used it over the 110 years the high school exists..."
Whenever I visit a historic place like this one, I try to imagine the persons that lived there... Who they were, their daily lives, their thoughts.
Thank you for this nostalgic trip to the past.
