The Pumpkin Seller Boy

avatar

It's been a while since my last creative work, painting or drawing, but I've been feeling the need to create something every single day for the past two months. The only impediment is time as I don't have any talent and wasting a few hours just to throw the paper away in the end is not something I would like.

The truth is, my dear friend @barbara-orenya has always been a great influence. I know her since 2016, we met on another platform and have always loved her art. In 2018 I started drawing for the first time in my life and I can thank her for that. She used to have tutorials that motivated me to start drawing, so I did. I have participated in different drawing contests on Hive (Steeemit actually) and have had a lot of fun. Then life has given me other assignments and have had no time for drawing.

Today I finally decided to make time for my passion and try to create something. For the past two days I tried to draw something every day, nothing specific, just what my mind was telling me and had to find out that the idea in my head is one thing, what I can create on paper is a totally different thing.

Fair Warning! I have no talent, so there's still time to turn around and run as fast as you can as what's coming may not be nice 😂

Gender Confused

First I thought I would draw a little girl but the first attempt looked very bad.

20221007_231958a.jpg

Then I changed the hair and got a terrible looking boy, which I did not like.

20221007_232316a.jpg

Then when I got to the part, where I had to write the body, I had t realize that not only I don't know how to draw the body (I mean I know it's going to be difficult), but also had to acknowledge that the paper was to small 😂 So that was the moment when I knew I need a trick and covering the body with pumpkins seemed the best idea.

20221009_142606a.jpg

This is how the idea was born and decided to do it properly. This is the sketch I did last night, just the main idea with intent to create something out of it today.

Materials

Lucky me, I had a lot of materials at home as a couple of years ago I thought I would draw and paint more.

20221009_125539a.jpg

I had a very good quality paper (my opinion), 210x297mm, 230g/2m2.

20221009_125507a.jpg

For coloring I had this box of pastel chalks, perfect for watercolor.

The Pumpkin Seller Boy

Today I had to start form the very beginning, had to check how to Gesso the paper as I have forgotten everything. Nice, isn't it?

20221009_130711a.jpg
I taped the paper to my usual surface I use for drawing and painting. It's a piece of glass, which is good when drawing, but with gesso, it's not the ideal surface as it lets the paper dry only on one part, opposite to canvas, but this has to do.

20221009_131358a.jpg

Then I spent 10 minutes looking for my brush to apply the gesso. Lucky me, I have a good memory and was able to remember where it could be, so I found it.

20221009_131912a.jpg

This time I paid more attention to how to apply the gesso, as the video said and also adjusted the paper after an hour, to dry straight.

20221009_141631a.jpg

20221009_141709a.jpg

After some thinking, I decided to go with green and blue for background as the pumpkins are orange, the boy's hat I thought could be red and wanted a contrast.

20221009_142539a.jpg

After taking the tape off, I was pleased to see the trick has worked and the paper was almost straight.

20221009_142927a.jpg

After I had no idea how to distribute the colors on the paper, I came up with this setup, which is not the best, but this is my first work, so I thought I will go easy on myself 😂

20221009_144218a.jpg

After applying water to the paper, this is what I got. Terrible, I know.

20221009_150445a.jpg

20221009_150855a.jpg

20221009_151447a.jpg
The I needed to draw the boy again as the initial sketch was done on an old yellow paper. Recreating a drawing for me is a challenge, even if it's my own. So I struggled a little, but did it in the end.

20221009_152250a.jpg

For coloring the drawing, I used my Mondeluz aquarelle pencils, which are like watercolor.

20221009_152257a.jpg

20221009_153938a.jpg

And this is where I should go hide behind the couch as the outcome is terrible. Turns out having 24 colors is not enough and there's no room for mistakes. The vest I had to recolor and looks like 💩, the shirt looks terrible too.

20221009_155530a.jpg

If you have thought the previous image is terrible, look at this. I made the mistake of using ordinary writing paper, which is thin and not suitable for applying water. If that wasn't enough, a few drops of water fall in the paper from the brush, flooding it.

20221009_161839a.jpg

After letting it dry, I cut it out, in order to glue it to the background.

20221009_163320a.jpg

When I saw this, knew something needed to be done.

20221009_191245a.jpg

This is called fake it till you make it.

20221009_195020a.jpg

Fortunately I managed to fix the shirt and the vest, also to make the pumpkins more visible. But the background was still terrible.

20221009_200607a.jpg

And here's the final outcome. I don't know if I made more damage with the ivy or it looks better, that's for you to decide.

Conclusion: It was fun as I needed a break from charts and everything else, but I suppose a 5 year old can do better, so I'll let drawing and painting for those who have talent. I'm not saying this is the end. I will probably have more attempts at drawing, but I will never be an artist 😂

Yeah, sometimes when I can't control myself, I am drawing 😄

I am full of surprises and I do stupid things like this. Once I started to draw a face, then could not decide if it was a woman or a man and the final result was still not clear.

IMG_20181024_175320a.jpg

Looks at this one. Is this a woman or a man? 😂

IMG_20180905_183649a.jpg

Look at this one. Do you recognize him? 😏

IMG_20181006_160043a1.jpg

What about her? Do you recognize her? 😂

For the first one, I can't decide either if it is a girl or a boy. I think it's a guy who has an alternative style, like using make-up, having his own style haircut etc. ;)

Oh, my... I couldn't recognize the people from the drawings... The face is so familiar, but can't remember!! aaaaa! It resembles Vásáry Tamás... but I am not sure.

The girl..., huh, have no clue but she is so pretty :)

Hi Erika

I think you're being way too hard on yourself. This is how we learn stuff in art. I've never used chalks like that before or gesso and even the idea of it gives me anxiety because it's unknown - whereas you picked up your art supplies and you went for it and look at the outcome, I think you did a great job.

The ivy actually works nicely.

I haven't sketched anything for a few weeks and really feel like it now, but have no idea what...maybe I should follow your lead and do something spooky for Halloween.

We just have to keep going and learn along the way 🦇😼🍬

Hello @emma-h. Thanks for the nice words, but I have to be hard on myself, otherwise there's no development. However, I'm not going to get depressed over this as this is just for fun and as long as I can laugh about it, it's fine.

Spooky Halloween things are good though but I think I would just stick to learning portraying by watching YouTube tutorials. Above you can see a few (awful 😂) drawings from me, so it's easier for me I think, to continue with that for the time being.

I'm looking forward to seeing your artworks and please tag me to not miss it 😃

Hey Erika, I really enjoyed your creativity. I remember you mentioned that you might also try drawing and I am glad to see that you have found some time and also made it. It is nice to know your thoughts throughout the process. It is often so that we start doing something and not always it is coming our way, during the process we often change our initial plans because sometimes it does not come as we want.

I love hte final result, looks really great!

Thank you for the nice words, you're very kind! 🙂

Uploading process photos on Hive is a must, no matter what you are creating and sharing my thoughts is the most important thing as that's where the fun is.

If you have one thing to remember and be inspired by, that is to have fun, and then, your art will always be successful in the pleasure it gave you ! I'm sure you had great fun, and compare yourself to a child is perfect, they are the greatest artists as they create for themselves, for the pleasure and well-being it gives to create ;-)

Wow...what a crafty and tender art✨ AND how creative. I love the way you show us the process and materials.
Very nice indeed... and the way you cut it out and put the background on it really is very original and dynamic🙌.
Best regards.

Hello @erikah, it's a job that reminds me of the time when I had a hobby in drawing art, but since I got married I've been busy with other work so I don't have time to start over, I really like art but don't have time to do it yet. Good job my friend

Put a beard on that little dude and It'll look exactly like me! I don't have a red hat though, but I have shirt that colour (it's actually camouflage) and a vest of a very similar nature to the one depicted in the image. Ok, so my smile is a little more roguish, but other than that, identical.

Who knew you were actually @erikahlangelo. 😁

Who would have thought there will be someone recognize himself in this boy 😁

Maybe next time I should do your portrait on paper 😇 Are you brave enough for that? 🤣

It looks very nice to me. Besides the face of the pumpkin seller transmits joy and at the same time tenderness for the work he does, very cute indeed.

You did great, I don't draw but nothing hehehe. Keep on with this passion that you do it very well.

Besides, part of doing what we like is to have fun and it is clear that you had a lot of fun in the process.

Blessings 🌟👏🏻🤗🙏🏻

Thank you for the nice words and I'm glad you see the joy on the boy's face :)

I think we all have an activity that helps us disconnect from the day by day problems and relax. You must have something too :)

Have a nice day!

Wooohaaaa! I didn't expect the end result to be this. It is looking soooo colourful and pretty. The colours from the marker did the magic seriously. Good job!! Keep it up.

I also crave from drawing and painting but life gives no space for it. That's why I am confined to only one passion right now and that is writing. Thanks to Hive for this

Beautiful you're drawing and most importantly, each stage of your art involved a lot of patience, perseverance and taking care of every detail until you reach the perfection of this gentleman who takes care of his pumpkins and planting that he has in the background full of flowers.

It is beautiful how your inner child enjoyed making this pumpkin patch ☮️

This is very beautiful! Here I am wishing I can actually put down something like this but I really can't. All I know how to do is draw basic shapes.

Maybe I'll give it a try. Who knows? Now that I'm much older my skills may actually be better😁

Great job👍

I feel I have the same relation with art like you. But I still post my art attempts frequently here in hopes of improving gradually.

Also, your drawing turned out pretty good in the end. The process is sometimes not that attractive but what matters is what you achieve in the end.

P.S. I don't know why but I feel the boy needs a gottee. 😂
