The Sweetest Period Of Gardening

avatar

Today I'm going to show you what we've been working for this gardening season. It's the time of the year when the fruit of our work is starting to appear. Come with me to show you what we have so far.

20230718_075339a.jpg

These are the cherry tomatoes that are starting to ripe this time of the year. These are not the tiny ones you buy at the grocery store, these are a bit bigger and very delicious. I had quite a few already and taste very good. The majority is still green, but it's the middle of July still, there's time for them to ripe.

20230718_075351a.jpg

This is the ox heart I believe. These are big and have less juice, thus perfect for eating and making tomato sauce or even juice as it's going to be thick.

20230718_075404a.jpg

To show you how big these are.

20230718_075422a.jpg

This is a different type, I don't know what it is called, but it's just as big as the other type, or even bigger. These are also good for everything, eating them fresh, making sauce or juice.

20230718_075531a.jpg

20230718_075523a.jpg

Some of you have told me I have a green thumb. Now I have green nails too 😂. These are not exactly for gardening, but the tomatoes and the cucumbers don't mind as my nails look like them.

20230718_075628a.jpg

Peppers are looking good. This is the biggest one and I may take this home with me. They still need time to ripe, but there are a few ready to be harvested.

20230718_075648a.jpg

20230718_075654a.jpg

20230718_075735a.jpg

Cucumbers are exceptional this year. It's like the growth is never ending. There were years when we could barely harvest any. This year the crop is abundant. See? My nail polish is almost the same color, just a different shade 😂

20230718_075712a.jpg

The biggest one is mine, I use it to hydrate my skin. It's the best and healthiest natural skin hydration.

20230718_075802a.jpg

Look at these beauties. Cute as a cucumber, isn't it?

20230718_075810(0)a.jpg

20230718_080833a.jpg

This is the celery. We use the leaves and the roots as well and I think they are ready to be harvested soon.

20230718_080843a.jpg

20230718_080855a.jpg

Eggplants we only have a few as the soil is not really suitable fr growing them here. Those brought from south are way better, so there's no point in wasting time with them. We're going to grill them tomorrow I think, let's see how the eggplant cream will turn out.

20230718_080919a.jpg

20230718_080928a.jpg

Beetroots. We have a love-hate relationship with them, or them with us? There years when we get none. Last year we had plenty and this year seems to be the same. God knows what's going on here. Maybe the seeds are different. I have no idea, but I'm glad we got some as I love beetroot pickles.

20230718_090739a.jpg

We've been harvesting raspberries for a few weeks now as they don't ripe all at once and put them in the freezer. Today it was the day for making jam. We've got 24 jars or pure raspberry jam. This is the first harvest as there will be the next one in September.

20230718_172907a.jpg

These are already in the cellar. Green beans with tomato sauce and cucumber pickles. Ready to be eaten.

Gardening July.jpg

There's still the tomato season to come, when we make juice and sauce, peppers need to grow a bit more, onions need to be harvested. I forgot to mention, we have squash as well, made pottage recently and was heavenly good. All in all we can't complain. This year is good so far.

Hello dear friend @erikah good day
I love gardening, although unfortunately I no longer do it because I injured my lumbar and cervical spine, I have six herniated discs.
This is the most pleasant moment for every farmer, here you can see if you have done things well, and if your efforts have paid off
The vegetables you have harvested are beautiful, my congratulations
I appreciate you sharing this experience.

I'm sorry to hear about your spine problems, must b difficult. I don't have hernia but sometimes I get back pain, so I know it's not a pleasant thing.

Thank you for the comment @jlufer and have a nice day.

Whoa
This is beautiful and some kind of natural aesthetic

I love gardening
And when I get married and have my own space, I would plant a lot of things with my kids.

Also I noticed in the pictures that the leaves are still fresh and bug free

Good luck with your plans, I hope you can get your garden as soon as possible.

Also I noticed in the pictures that the leaves are still fresh and bug free

That's the bare minimum you can do for your plants, otherwise all is in vain.

Wow very productive harvest. I'm ready to eat some garden foods now. Wow those cherry tomatoes are huge, never seen them that large. The Ox heart look very healthy as well. Oh some eggplant does sound good and grilling it sounds so yummy. 24 jars of raspberry jam wow. Canning is good thing, sadly I don't know much about but my mom did it a lot. I bet you have a lot of jars, haha.

Good for you if you can get some garden food as it's healthier than what you buy at the grocery store or the supermarket.

Cherry tomatoes are of many types, we have at last 3. Red, yellow and black and how many exists out there.

We're canning quite a lot of veggies and fruits as the winter is long and we can grow our own, healthy fruits and veggies.

I bet you have a lot of jars, haha.

You would be shocked to see my pantry and cellar 😂

The tomatoes are cool and I wish I can get their species especially the first one. It's big and according to you, it doesn't contain much juice. That's excellent.

Honestly, you guys have varieties of seasonal fruits over there. I wish I can taste all of them ooo. Especially, the berries

I could get you the species, but I'm sure you would not find seeds over there, let alone grow them as they need a certain climate and soil, which most likely you don't have in Nigeria. This is why there are so many types, to find a suitable one that can be grown in your area. This is why you don't have berries either as those won't survive in Africa.

Cucumber is really like your nail polish. Same but shade is different. I really laughed over it. Thank you for making me laugh and smile 😊. By the way love to your garden. Your efforts are bringing results.

Expectacular harvest.

For tomatoes, I recommend tying the clusters to the stake to prevent the plant from breaking.

I have now published a post in which I comment on this trick and show a photo 7 of my post.

Link to Tomatoes Post

To tie them I use strips of cloth from an old t-shirt so as not to damage the tomatoes or the plant.

Regards.

These are tied up, the string is still visible on the photos. The first one is cherry tomato, so those seem to be many, but are small and there's no danger of breaking. Actually we have never had that problem.

Using recycled material is a good idea. We've been doing that for years. These strings are recycled each year. Not long ago I had a post in which I showed my old internet cable holding the cucumber net.

Especially in your third photo I see a lot of tomatoes and it seems that the stem leading to the bunch is a bit strangled.

That's why I was telling you about the option of helping the tomato plant.

Second use and recycling is always the best option.

Regards.

No danger of that. Those stems don't need to be horizontal.

Your garden looks great. You have a lot of variety. Those are some giant beets. I have never seen them so big before. I am also looking forward to tomatoes ripening. We both have something to look forward to.

Thank you! Beets are of many types, so most likely you have a different one. Basically it doesn't matter, if it's suitable for growing and has a good taste.
Good luck with the tomatoes :)

the shape of the tomatoes is very unique, where I live it seems more oval and round. what type of tomato is that?.

We have oval and round too. You go to the gardening hypermarket and you see a wall full of tomato seeds, endless variety on the shelves. I could tell you their names, but you sue won't find them over there. One is mentioned in my post.

Of course I want to see it, I like to see the garden produce, because I was born into a family of farmers.

The pictures are looking great and clean. And having to take this all home is sweet indeed. I am most interested in the tomatoes, I love them. And for the celery, looks like the first time I am seeing them.

Thank you. I tried my best. Tomatoes are my favorite too. Celery is for flavor, it's not a base vegetable, it may not be popular either.

That is an amazing garden and harvest so far. Those tomatoes are looking just super yum. I would love to grab one of those off the plant when ripe and just bite right into it. Loved your nail polish.

Raspberries jam....hmmmmm. .. I can feel the sweetness in my mouth.

I have no idea ho many days it takes as these are canned in July, August and eaten starting with November, or sooner.

Lol, my famous green nail polish 😂 🙈. See? It's perfect for gardening.

Wow! I Hope I can also plant fresh fruits and vegetables like you. I tried to plant a guyabano tree and vegetables in the backyard of our School when I was in elementary school because it was a part of our activity, but the tree and vegetables that I planted didn't live well. 🥹

and that's also the reason why I didn't try to plant some again, but I was planning on planting some flowers in our backyard as I see it so plain and dull there, but I don't know how to plant flower seeds. Maybe I can watch some tutorials on YouTube or TikTok. Lol

Your garden looks amazing! I'm so impressed with the variety of fruits and vegetables you have growing. The tomatoes, cucumbers, and raspberries look especially delicious.

I love that you're using your garden produce to make jam and pickles. It's so satisfying to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

is clear that you've put a lot of hard work into it, and it's paying off. I'm sure you'll enjoy all the delicious food you'll be able to enjoy this summer.

Wow! You have a great harvest. I liked cherry tomatoes. They are not as small as in the store.

Can you share your cucumber recipe? Each housewife has her own special recipe.

I like to close in jars everything that gets into my hands)). I like to cook jam so that all the neighbors can hear this smell)). And I like to cook vegetable salads and close for the winter.

I somehow didn’t think about raspberries to freeze them for the winter. This is good advice. Thank you.
