Visiting Sovata And The "Kicsi Gomba" (Small Mushroom) Restaurant

avatar

Sovata is a well known tourist destination in Mureș county and not only. It is the perfect place if you want to enjoy the benefits of salty water, modern spa facilities and some nice scenery that reminds you of the mountains. However, one thing the place is famous for is the lake, called Medve-tó in Hungarian, Lacul Ursu in Romanian, Bear Lake in English. That's the magnet of the place, that attracts thousands of tourists daily from all over the world.

Sovata And The Kicsi Gomba.jpg

The geological events in 1875 gave birth to the Bear Lake, which is unique in Europe, its water being helio-thermal and salty, with purported therapeutic effects for chronic gynecological symptoms, severe rheumatic pains, peripheral nervous system, and post-accidental motor diseases.

There are four more salty lakes: Nut Lake, Black Lake, Red Lake, and Green Lake. In the interwar period, Sovata became one of the most fashionable spas in the country, visited several times even by the Romanian Royal Family. source

How To Get There

Once you get to Sovata, there are indicators everywhere, directing you the right way to the lake and tourist area. The lake is almost at the top of the tourist center, you can't miss it.

The city is quite small, the population is under 10k, but the place around the lake area is packed during summer and not only.

20230730_144925a.jpg

On the way up, I took some photos to be able to show you what the place looks like. On the photo above you can see the Bear Inn, which is and iconic building of the town. I've been told it's still in use but it's not what it used to be back in its glory days. With the new places opening one after the other, this one will be forgotten.

20230730_145215a.jpg

The place is in constant development, new hotels, inns, restaurants are built each year, to replace the old ones and to satisfy the needs of the tourists.

20230730_145218a.jpg

You can choose between modern establishments and more rustic ones, depending on what your expectations are. You can find both there.

20230730_145231a.jpg

20230730_145307a.jpg

20230730_145310a.jpg

On the right, you can see the cream colored building with those fancy balconies.

20230730_145312a.jpg

Before the rebuilding of the place began, that architectural style was very common there. Most of the inns and cabins were made of wood and had these decorated balconies.

20230730_145320a.jpg

20230730_145328a.jpg

Today you can choose from rustic style and luxury hotels, but you need to book your accommodation well in advance as in full season it's highly unlikely you can get a room. What you see on my photos is a typical Sunday and I was lucky as the photos were taken from the car on the go. Otherwise I would have been facing the crowd on the sidewalk.

20230730_145336a.jpg

The number of souvenir shops is endless there and you can find the traditional food of the region, among which obviously lángos and kürtöskalács.

20230730_145354(0)a.jpg

If you're in and adventurous mood, you can take the fun train and ride it through the place.

And here it is, the Kicsi Gomba restaurant, or the Small Mushroom in English.

20230730_145500a.jpg

Kicsi Gomba Or Small Mushroom Restaurant

The restaurant is situated right next to the Bear Lake, the best place for a restaurant if you ask me. It has a pentagonal shape and has several levels.

20230730_163128(0)a.jpg

20230730_163150a.jpg

At the main entrance of the restaurant, you can find some really interesting and nice decorations that matches the style of the restaurant.

20230730_163112a.jpg

There's a message at the entrance as well, which I totally agree with and I think it's a good one to follow, if you want the world to change.

20230730_163106a.jpg

An interesting detail to note, you can browse the menu right at the entrance, without entering the restaurant. You can decide if you want to eat there or not. This is common practice in Europe, but not so much in my country. In most of the places you can't even get the menu till the waiter brings it to you, which, in my opinion is not the best strategy. I hope things can change and making the menu available at the door becomes normal. We live in the digital era now, you should be able to access the menu by scanning a QR code as well. The restaurant has the menu online as well, so if you want to know what they are serving, here it is, in English as well.

20230730_163042a.jpg

20230730_163046a.jpg

20230730_163055a.jpg

You can choose to sit inside, or book a table at one of the terraces and admire the view from there, while serving a delicious meal. I suggest the latter, trust me.

20230730_151316a.jpg

20230730_151309a.jpg

We opted for the terrace for the obvious reasons.

20230730_145950a.jpg

The menu is very interesting, you can find all kinds of exquisite dishes for every taste. I wish I could have tasted everything, but I only have one stomach and had to watch my calorie intake as well.

20230730_154217a.jpg

So this is what I ordered: grilled chicken breast with vegetables and I must admit, it was heavenly good, I hope to be able to go back and have some more. And below you can see what the others ordered.

20230730_154130a.jpg

This was tagliatelle with truffle sauce. I need to try this one as well.

20230730_154156a.jpg

Knuckle of ham with mashed potatoes. Mouth watering view for sure, so it is on my list.

20230730_154159a.jpg

Turkey breast with fries.

20230730_155838a.jpg

After lunch I had a black tea, which was served with lemon and honey, but I only used the lemon as I don't like my tea sweet and gave the lemon to someone else, who had a soar throat. The tea was heavenly good too. The have 5 types of lemonade that are served with ice. Definitely need to taste them next time.

20230730_151344a.jpg

20230730_145745a.jpg

Last, but not least, the view! This is the view from the terrace of the restaurant. You can see the famous Bear lake below. What better place to have lunch at, then there, right?

If you haven't visited Sovata yet and you're in the area, don't hesitate. It's a very nice place and those waters have a lot of health benefits, not to mention the spas available. There are different activities organized and trips to the nearby places, like the salt mine in Parajd (Praid) for example and not only.

This was just a quick visit, we did not get to spend more time there, but I'm planning to go back one day for a few days, when I'll have more time.

Good afternoon dear friend @erikah how are you
What a lovely town to visit, I appreciate you letting us know how to get there
I really like the construction style of the buildings, the different types and shapes of the roofs attract my attention.
The exterior and the facilities of the restaurant look very good, the dishes are exquisite, I loved the menus that you have chosen
I love tea, but only, without lemon and no honey
I appreciate that you have shared this pleasant experience.
Have a beautiful afternoon

Sovata is one of the resorts in Romania that I love very much, and I went to Ursu Lake and got into the water, even though I can't swim at all I was able to float for minutes on the lake without much effort.
We also visited the resort with that tourist train(I even saw it in one of your pictures), which was a nice experience.
The time spent in the resort was superlative, beautiful places, nice people, in general a holiday vibe.
I didn't mention anything about the food because the food is very good and needs no description, I ate in several places and it was perfect.

Yes, salty water keeps you floating and if you don't panic, you can stay in the water for long.

It is indeed a beautiful place, has a lot to offer as well. The only downside is that it's too crowded. During summer months it's too crowded, but not everyone minds.

I'm glad you liked the place and the food as well. A good experience will always take you back to the place :)

You're right, a pleasant experience had in one place will definitely bring you back, now I have to admit I don't really like very crowded places.
But you have to make sacrifices if you want to visit beautiful places😉

I agree, we need to adjust as the situation won't adjust to our needs 😃

What a lovely location, I would say it is a nice location for a holiday. The food looks delicious too...I really like the simple interior design of the restaurant, it's not unique but still, it's a good place to enjoy lunch...

Terrace is surely the best place to eat. I often choose thst place, too. I like to see the view below no matter what it is. Great place, surely those foods are mouth watering cause now I'm hungry. 😆

I agree, terraces are perfect, better than the inside space. Indeed, the food is great.

Well first of all, I ordered a limoncello sprite hahahaha... I'm hot.

Erikah, what a nice place. I love the flowers on the streets, it looks so colorful. And the buildings are modern, but they have left them some elements of the historical architecture and that's great.

I tried to order the typical food but I couldn't pronounce... I'll just order a pizza with chili and four different kinds of cheeses, will there be any? sure there will be.

I loved the last picture.

Have a nice weekend ;)

The limoncello sprite would have been excellent, but it was too hot.

Decorating the streets with flowers is a common practice here and makes the place more enjoyable.

Sorry, no pizza there (I think). You can find pizza everywhere, so the idea is to offer something you can't find elsewhere, so ... you need to choose something else.

Thanks for dropping by and have a nice weekend too :)

In most of the places you can't even get the menu till the waiter brings it to you, which, in my opinion is not the best strategy.

I can't tell you how many times I look online before going somewhere to eat, especially if it's a new place. It can be a deciding factor sometimes if I go or not. I can say almost every restaurant has menus online here even the small hole in the walls. I wonder why that is where you live. The QR thing is funny I didn't know how to do it until about a year ago. I was forced to because they didn't have a manual menus.

Yes it is nice to eat at a restaurant by the lake. I agree with eating a nice meal with a great view point if it's available. You know what I would be doing on Bear Lake after dinner if it's allowed, haha.

Thanks for the great views of this place. The last picture I have a question. Is that a deck beach and is it sand on it? Interesting I haven't seen something like this before.

Well, some small businesses can't afford, or don't want to spend money on setting up a website, but no worries as the competition is fierce, so they will have no choice soon.

The QR code menu gained a lot of space during covid. They were not allowed to hand out menus, so some of them set up a website with a menu and also listed the menu on a board.

You know what I would be doing on Bear Lake after dinner if it's allowed, haha.

Lol, wouldn't be you otherwise, but I have to disappoint you, the only thing you can fish for on the lake is nice ladies or gentlemen, or both, depending on your preference 😂. No fishing is allowed as far as I know, but can ask around 😁

It's a deck beach, make of wood. There's no sand there as it's basically on the lake.

Part of it looks sand colored probably is. I figured there was no swimming there's probably no fishing.

Oh COVID a lot of places here did disposable paper menus and also offered a lot less of their menus

You can swim there, no restrictions.
