Visiting The Ion Vlasiu Sculpture And Painting Exhibition
Every exhibition is interesting in it's own way. If it's a mixed exhibition, in which there are several artists' work displayed, you get to compare the artworks to a certain degree or see the difference in style. If it's the exhibition of a single artist, you have the chance to see what the artist was drawn to and how his or her style may have changed in time.
There's never two similar exhibitions as there's never two similar artworks. This makes every exhibition unique and interesting.
Ion Vlasiu was a Romanian sculptor, writer and painter, which is why you see paintings, sculptures and books in the exhibition room.
The room itself was interesting as when I entered and had a look around, I thought it's a very long room, but then I had a closer look and had to realize, there's a poster on the back wall, about the workshop of the artist, that makes you believe the room is double sized.
The poster is a sepia for a good reason. The sculptures are either clay or marble, the floor is wood, the walls are white, there are no colors in the room basically. Sepia was very popular in the 20th century by the way. It gives an old feeling to the photo.
The first thing I noticed when I entered the room was this very old wall clock, that must have seen better days and this wooden cupboard. This is a typical piece of furniture you could find in rural areas. This is not a fine piece but still nice. The plates in it are also wooden plates as back then porcelain was almost non existent, or only for the wealthy nobles.
In this corner there were mostly portraits hanged on the wall, which led me to believe he's been interested in capturing moments from people's life. The statue is of Ion Creangă, one of the most famous Romanian writers.
There were a few sculptures I liked and this is one of them. It is the head of Wilhem Beneș, who I've never heard of and could not find out who he was, but regardless, the sculpture did a great job. Look at those details, the wrinkles on his forehead, the hair, the nose. It's excellent work.
Statue of Mihai Eminescu, one of the most famous personalities of the 19th century, a novelist, journalist and poet.
Horea, Cloșca and Crișan, the tree people who started the revolt in 1784 in Transylvania.
The tree revolutionary on the paintings and the statue is also featuring one of them. These paintings are a it rough for my taste, but I love the color combination.
This is the auto portrait of the sculptor, which was in a very unusual position.
This is where the fun started. They say when you need explanation to what you are looking at, it means you don't understand art (or anything). I admit, I was puzzled, had no idea what this thing is. The label says it's called "Earthly Paradise". 😳
I'm not sure that I could say here, other than it's tall, skinny and strange.
Columns with birds it is called. 😳😳
More interesting sculptures. A mother with two children in her arms on the left, some interesting heads thrown around and some ladies standing.
Portrait of a woman, it says. The back of the head is missing though.
The exhibition can be visited in the Palace of Culture in Targu Mures. I don't know if it is a temporary exhibition or not, my guess is that it is. I tried to capture the essence of the exposition, and had to do it fast as there are cameras everywhere and in most of the rooms taking photos is not allowed. There was no sign on this door or inside, nor was anyone guarding the place, but you never know when a voice is going to call you cheater for not respecting the rules.
So, which piece of artwork is your favorite?
