Where Is Your Country Sitting On The List?

Yesterday, why looking around on the internet, so see what's happened in the world, there was an article title, that caught my eye. The title of the article was: Thailand only 21st best in ranking of world’s best cuisines. At first I did not understand why the article mentioned Thailand, as I don't know if Thailand has ever been among the first countries in the culinary list, but then I saw the platform was called www.thaienquirer.com, which explained everything.

Reading the first paragraph of the article made me smile.

Thai foodies around the world, it is time to get out your pitchforks. A comprehensive list released by the website Taste Atlas has ranked the world’s cuisine by rank and Thailand’s place on the list is absolutely deplorable. Let’s forget for a minute how ridiculous it is to try and rank cuisines. The fact that we are behind noted culinary giants like Romania, Bulgaria, and the USA?! We’re behind burgers and fries?!

Obviously the author of the article was outraged by Thailand's ranking, which is funny.

Because the article in fact is just one paragraph, I thought let's have a look at the list. Seeing my country ranking fourth left me speechless. Usually we are ranking the highest on lists for all the wrong reasons, like corruption, inflation and so on and rarely for good things.

I was curious to know more about this list and and how it has been created, so I went to look for it on https://www.tasteatlas.com and I was able to find it.

We have counted over 100,000 ratings for all dishes and food products on TasteAtlas. These are the average ratings per cuisine. source

If you click the link, you'll see a few dishes and products listed under each country. This was a good game to test my knowledge and see how many dishes and products I know. Obviously I know my country's cuisine, so I know all the dishes and products and can assure you these are all good.

We not only live in the digital era but travel is made much more easier, which means culture and cuisine can spread more easily. We have Chinese food for example almost everywhere in the world, no matter where you are, who you talk to, everyone knows Chinese food. The Italian cuisine is also famous worldwide as everyone knows pizza and pasta. French cuisine is also famous and I bet every country has a dish that is known for.

So let's have a little fun. Let's see how much you know about these countries' cuisine? Try to name one dish from every country on the list and try to get it right. It is a difficult task, I can assure you as we all know a lot of food names, but do we know where are those originating from?

While writing this post, I just remembered Gazpacho but could not remember anything else about it. I had a vague recollection that it is a Spanish dish, could be Mexican, but I was wrong.

I consider that you can never know too much and when you're traveling abroad, it doesn't hurt to know what to order, if you don't want to end up getting something you don't like.

While in the Hague, we went to a brand new restaurant at the opening night. I can't remember what I ordered, but I know I asked the waitress if it's hot. She said it's not, but I suppose my definition of hot and theirs differed a lot as I got a hot dish I could not eat. When I complained, they said almost every Thai dish is hot, but to varying degree. Now I know.
