The Mistakes of the Previous Year

It's a new year, and we want to be better versions of ourselves. Tell us about the recurring expenses in your life that you can do without but still do. What relevance are they to you, and what would it be like to be without them?

It's a new year, it's is a new beginning, it's is a new opportunity. As humans we are bound to make mistakes, and in my own case, I made lots of mistakes the previous year. Yes! It's a new year and I will do all that is in power to ensure that these mistakes would not be repeated. So help me me God🙏.

Managing one's finance is a very difficult task. Now, it doesn't matter how much you earn, all that matters is how well you are able to manage your expenses. As an individual, I've got so many unnecessary expenses, ones that I can completely do without. Responding to the week's topic, I will be shearing some of these unnecessary expenses of mine with you. Just hang on as we go about this journey 😊.

PICNIC BISCUIT

For those of us from Nigeria, you must have come across this biscuit called picnic. For some reason, this biscuit became my favourite in the year 2023. Due to how much I love this biscuit, I spent an average of 5 thousand Naira (₦5,000) on this biscuit every month. By implication, I spent sixty thousand Naira (₦60,000) on this biscuit in the year 2023. Spending sixty thousand Naira in a whole year just on one project would not have been much, but then, picnic biscuit was never a project. Being a junk food, it added no nutritional value to my being, but yet it took away over one month salary of mine in the year 2023😀. I wonder how much I would have earned if I have invested that money🤔.

EATING OUT

In Nigeria where I come from, an average square meal cost about one thousand Naira (₦1,000). By implication, eating out for a whole day will demand that you spend between two thousand five hundred Naira (₦2,500) to three thousand Naira (₦3,000). For an average salary earner like me, I would spend more than what I earn if I decide to eat out for a whole month. Being fully aware this, I Mister Ernest deliberately bought food outside on several occasions this year. To save cost, I would have easily prepared my meal from home before going to work, but laziness never allowed me😔. Even though I cannot give a total cost of how much I spent eating out this year, I am completely aware of the fact that I spent over half of my salary on that each month. Having established that, I will do all that is in my power to avoid that this year.

SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEOS

At the very beginning of this year, I deleted my Facebook social media app. Having sat down to calculate how much I spend on mobile data each month, I got to realise that 60 to 70 percent of my monthly data are being spent on Facebook videos. Now, these videos are not really necessary and at the same time, they consume huge amount of my time. Spending an average of five to six thousand Naira every month just on Facebook videos does not worth it, and I am definitely cutting it off this year.

CONCLUSION

Having examined my expenses, I obviously spent more than I earned in the year 2023. I have also come realise that most of these expenses could have been avoided. That notwithstanding, I was unable to avoid them the year before now. It's a new year, one that comes along with new opportunities. I just pray I don't misuse my opportunities this time. So help me God 🙏

Thank you so much for finding time to go through my post. One love ✌️

That is nice that you found the best way to cut down of your expenses. Facebook videos can really be a distraction, but I still could not delete the app, nor find a way to limit my watching habits just yet. !LOLZ

This is a great realization, and it's good that you're reflecting on your past decisions and looking ahead to new opportunities. New years can indeed be a fresh start, but it's also up to us to make the most of them. Your willingness to seek help and guidance is admirable, and I believe that prayer can be a powerful tool for seeking clarity and direction.

Thanks for sharing 🤗🤗

Mad oh. I never would have imagined that so much money could be spent on biscuits alone. Makes me very curious about how special it must be for you.

Eating out is also a thing for me. You can imagine the houses we could have built if we didn't spend so much to eat outside. Looks like you and I will indulge in cooking for ourselves a lot this year.

Thank you for participating.
