spring run in snow

Cold and wet weather front passed us this morning. Which meant that snow was falling for several hours. Big and heavy snowflakes quickly covered the ground. Great for kids of all ages to have winter fun again. Not so great for blossoming nature.

This afternoon I was in Trzin and took the chance to run there. From the town, I followed the road by the forest towards the Jable castle.

THere I entered the forest on a road well known to me which leads to a small skiing slope.

When in the woods I couldn't help myself but veer off the road and into the bush and on the fresh snow. It was so much fun to run in the ankle-deep snow.

There is a locally famous rock in the vicinity with a geocache nearby. I tried to find it without any technical help.

You can check on the map at the end of this report, kilometer 3, that I found the spot without any problems.

On the rock, there is an engraving saying Čuvajte Jugoslavijo.

The story has it that the sign was engraved after Yugoslav king Aleksander Karađorđević was assassinated in Marseille on October 9th, 1934.

It's a fitting visit on a day when 80 years ago Yugoslavia was bombarded by Nazi planes and WW2 started in this area.

Today, freedom and liberty, and peace in this struggling world are even more important than ever.

A look back at the meadow where the rock and the geocache are hidden. Imagine it in the summer with the fern and thorny bush growing thick and over your head. This area is almost impassable then.

On my return, I admired the pond by the Jable castle. The castle deserves an article on its own.

A view across the snow-covered field toward the cloudy mountains.

It was a nice short yet interesting run. Snow added a whole new dimension to it.

Running ankle deeps in snow. Is it not hard? Have done it in sand before and it was not fun.

It depends on the snow. Today the fresh snow was wet yet not too heavy so it was not too hard to run in it.

Yes, sand/beach running is a hard thing too. It has this charm of running free yet in reality it is hard work. Plus you can get injured easily. Uneven terrain, irregular hardness of the ground, a constant search between just right line, not too soft and not too hard, running several kilometers up beach slanted into one direction, toward the sea, then turning and limping back with the other leg. In short, it's not healthy. It's a nightmare for your ankles.

So. I avoid sand running. It may sound romantic yet it isn't good for your legs.
