Thailand - New Regulations and Upcoming CBDC Project

Asian nations are in the process of going digital. Prior to blockchain payments many of them tried UPI and it is working out for them. However at some point they have to come up with the digital currency equivalent of their own cash. And so they are moving towards new set of regulations and CBDC.

Thailand being one of the popular places for the tourist attraction and the amount of people who traded crypto with the local kind of affected the local economy. Many locals got rich over period of time accepting the crypto however the govt didn't get it's cut and so they banned the crypto in the past.

Now their mindset is changing and they want to create the CBDC project and allow the users to trade crypto and also get taxed in the process. So they are seeing these things with open mindset and wish to regulate everything to avoid money laundering.

Regulations of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of Thailand

Thailand has it's own version of the SEC like USA. And they are pretty active in the space of the anti money laundering. Like the place gets a lot of people from around the world who bring their funds into the nation and often cause a lot of financial stress which with the introduction of crypto has increased over a period of times.

New regulations are being put after going through variety of bans and the manipulations of the crypto and the open market that has caused the money laundering issues in the nations.

Here are some of the new regulations that were put up by the SEC of Thailand.

• Without license no exchange, business and consumer can promote crypto lending, sales and the marketplace type ads, word of mouth news and the services
• Any service related to crypto if provided without license it would be leading to the punishment and the fine.
• Any form of the scheme or the profit generation venture like celsius that generated ROI for deposits would not be allowed without license and the govt approval
• SEC will come up with it's own set of rules for the advertisement, promotion, circulation rules

$15B Central Bank Digital Currency

Once the crypto regulations are in place, the next step would be bringing in the digitial currency and making sure to move funds into the bank through the app and the variety of protocol. And for this Thailand Banks are coming up with $15B worth of CBDC project. As it's current state is delayed to one more year ahead.

Like in 2025 they may start the pilot and the final release which is something most of the banks around the world are about to do. And we are going to see the new changes coming into the market. So hopefully Thailand would be one of the tourist destination that would accept the cross border payments without forex terminals.

It'd take longer for the consumer CBDC to launch but the retail tests are going on and they want to pilot to large numbers by the year end. Which is what would be going through the test before they can apply this to people in larger number and also it'd be easier to test the business usage too.

As new regulations are put forth, the crypto would be discouraged and more usage of the stablecoin and the cryptos that are meant for the govt to monitor would be pushed. I won't be surprised if the USDT would get ban and CBDC from USA gets the preference in the nation, which is how it should be for the forex laws.

Thailand has slowly started getting into the crypto and the blockchain use case. Which means their future for the digital economy is strongly handled through process and CBDC would be making it easier for both locals and the tourist to interact financially in their nation.
