[ENG/ESP] LOH # 297. The courage to name primary shame / La valentía de nombrar la vergüenza primaria
ENGLISH
The question of which emotions we find difficult to express confronts me with an uncomfortable reality: I don't find it particularly difficult to talk about everyday frustrations, fleeting anger, or occasional sadness, because these have a clear cause, an external origin, and a predictable end.
What truly paralyzes me, what creates an unbreakable lump in my throat, is the need to confess my primal fear of fundamental inadequacy. I'm not referring to academic or professional failure, but to that visceral feeling that my identity, at its purest core, is intrinsically flawed or unworthy of unconditional love.
This feeling, which borders on primal shame, is elusive. While anger is projected outward and anxiety manifests in physical symptoms, the feeling of inadequacy settles silently like a permanent tenant, eroding the foundations of my personal security.
Opening up about it means stripping bare the entire framework of my self-esteem. The fear isn't so much of explicit rejection, but of the painful confirmation of my worst suspicions; I fear that, by saying it, the other person will agree with and validate my self-deprecating prophecy.
It's an act of extreme risk because I'm handing over the master key to my own worth and allowing another person to decide whether or not I'm worthy. Vulnerability in this area feels like stripping naked in public without a safety net.
However, over the years, I've discovered that certain factors transform this titanic difficulty into a manageable, and even healing, process. The first factor, and perhaps the most powerful, is the experience of mutual vulnerability.
When someone I deeply respect dares to reveal their own existential fractures without filters, the pedestal of perfection crumbles. Seeing that others, whom I admire, also doubt their worth and struggle with their inner demons takes the edge off the matter.
It clearly reminds me that imperfection is not a shameful exception, but the very condition of being human. The isolation is broken when I discover that I am not the only inhabitant of this island of fear.
The second crucial element is the conscious creation of a safe space. Not everyone is receptive to these confessions; some, however well-intentioned, react with practical advice or platitudes that trivialize my pain. I find genuine relief when the person I'm talking to doesn't try to solve my problems or downplay my anguish, but simply sits and holds my confession without judgment.
I need a witness who has demonstrated, through actions, not words, that trust is a sacred pact. In those spaces, whether with a close friend who has seen my worst days or in the context of therapy, the pressure lessens because I know the goal isn't to "fix" me, but simply to "accompany" me through the emotional labyrinth without losing sight of me.
Furthermore, I've learned that writing beforehand acts as an indispensable bridge. Writing down what I feel allows me to distill the emotional chaos into manageable concepts. When I manage to name that inner monster, stripping it of its metaphysical grandiloquence and turning it into earthly words, it becomes infinitely easier to share it out loud.
Talking then becomes the final step in a process I've already begun alone, which reduces the feeling of risk and gives me some control over the narrative of my own vulnerability. Putting words to the intangible makes it less frightening.
The difficulty in opening up about my inadequacy doesn't disappear, but it transforms. I no longer perceive opening up about my fear of not being enough as an act of surrender, but as an exercise in courage and authenticity.
