Review: The long walk (La larga marcha), Stephen King (ENG/ESP)
Hello everyone! Since the release of the popular series "The Squid Game", a dystopian series, I remembered the first book I read by this great author and I liked it very much. The Long Walk is another kind of "game" or "competition" for money, set in a futuristic society and with a military government in the United States.
¡Hola a todos! Desde la salida de la serie popular “El juego del calamar”, serie distópica, recordé el primer libro que leí de este gran autor y que me gustó mucho. La larga marcha es otra especie de “juego” o “competencia” por dinero, ambientada en una sociedad futurista y con un gobierno militar en Estados Unidos.

Plot: The novel tells the history of Ray Garraty, a 17-year-old teenager, who is chosen out of millions of boys to participate in The Long Walk. This annual competition consists simply of walking down a road without stopping and reaching the finish line. Ray competes with 100 teenagers who put their lives on the line to try to win a prize, fame, fortune and whatever the winner asks for. If Ray wants to win, which translates to keeping his life, he will have to forget about his teammates and run over them, leaving their bodies behind.
Trama: La novela cuenta la historia de Ray Garraty, un adolescente de 17 años, que es escogido por entre millones de chicos para participar en la larga marcha. Esta competición anual consiste simplemente en caminar por una carretera sin detenerse y llegar a la meta. Ray compite con 100 adolescentes que se juegan la vida para intentar ganar un premio, fama, fortuna y lo que el ganador pida. Si Ray quiere ganar, en lo que se traduce conservar la vida, tendrá que olvidarse de sus compañeros y pasar por encima de ellos, dejando sus cuerpos atrás.
My opinion/Mi opinión:
The play is set in a futuristic society, although we can only guess at this because there is no definite time, located in the United States. The government is made up of military men, where the main figure is "The Commander". Of the context in which it occurs and the society in which the history is immersed we can only make expectations, since the plot line follows the main character (Ray Garraty) and there are not many descriptions of the rest. I wish there had been. The long book at times becomes dense and repetitive as it only narrates what happens on the road. We only get to see some aspect of the character's past, but nothing more.
La obra está situada en una sociedad futurista, aunque esto solo lo podemos adivinar porque no hay un tiempo definido, ubicada en Estados Unidos. El gobierno está conformado por militares, donde la figura principal es “El comandante”. Del contexto en que ocurre y la sociedad en que está inmersa la historia sólo podemos hacer especulaciones, ya que la línea argumental sigue al personaje principal (Ray Garraty) y no hay muchas descripciones de lo demás. Me hubiera gustado que las hubiera. El largo libro a veces se torna denso y repetitivo al sólo narrar lo que acontece en la carretera. Sólo podemos ver algún aspecto del pasado del personaje, pero nada más.
As for the characters, there is a great evolution. We can see the change that takes place between the boy and the man, in the face of the adversities that occur along the march. The author is very explicit, detailing the problems of the competitors (stumbles, blisters, coughs, fever, stomach cramps, lack of oxygen, and even mental disorders). They eventually realize that life is at stake and that they must be stronger than their opponents. Not physical strength, but mental strength. Madness shows itself as a ghost that haunts them and, as time and days go by, it becomes more and more real. Ray makes friends and enemies, they form support groups that eventually fade away. All must leave their companions behind and many cannot stand it.
En cuanto a los personajes hay una gran evolución. Podemos ver el cambio que se produce entre el niño y el hombre, ante las adversidades que ocurren a lo largo de la marcha. El autor es muy explícito, detalla los problemas de los competidores (tropezones, ampollas, tos, fiebre, calambres estomacales, falta de oxígeno, y hasta trastornos mentales). Acaban por darse cuenta que la vida está en juego y que deben ser más fuertes que sus contrincantes. No fuerza física, sino mental. La locura se muestra como un fantasma que los persigue y, mientras más pasa el tiempo y los días, se va haciendo cada vez más real. Ray hace amigo y enemigos, arman grupos de apoyo que con el tiempo se desvanecen. Todos deben dejar a sus compañeros detrás y muchos no pueden soportarlo.
It's a harsh and cruel history, hard to take in sometimes, as corpses are left on the road. However, I liked it a lot. Although from the first moment we can deduce who will win the competition, it goes beyond that. Reflection on life and death, and the reasons why they find themselves competing fill the entire book. Friendship also comes into play, and even the critique of a desensitized society highlights how dangerous our world can become if we continue on the path that society is on today.
Es una historia dura y cruel, difícil de asimilar algunas veces, mientras los cadáveres quedan en la carretera. Sin embargo, me ha gustado mucho. A pesar de que desde el primer momento podemos deducir quién ganará la competencia, va más allá de eso. La reflexión en torno de la vida y la muerte, y las razones por la que se encuentran compitiendo llenan todo el libro. La amistad también entra en juego e, incluso, la crítica a una sociedad insensibilizada nos pone en relieve lo peligroso que puede llegar a ser nuestro mundo si seguimos por el camino en que está la sociedad actual.
