Do you know that babies have more bones than adults?

Hey greetings people!

Today is Nigeria's democracy day, and so before I will start to talk about the main theme of this article, I want to seize this opportunity to wish every of my fellow compatriots, happy democracy day. Nigeria's journey to democracy wasn't easy. It was a very dark period in the history of the country; it was a struggle of no small degree in which some actors paid the supreme price that we may have this day. This explains why the government declare 12th June as the nation's democracy day.

But that's by the way, however, and by no means the subject of this article. So do you know that babies are born with a lot more bones than adults?! I guess this will come as a surprise to some, while those with medical and paramedical backgrounds know that this is a fact.

Typically, babies are born with about 305 bones while an adult human being has about 206 bones. However, as babies pass through different states of growth and development, these bones would get harder, and so will fuse together to form one borne, thereby reducing the number of bones in the baby's body.

Let's take for example what happens in the skull. Skull, in the beginning, is made of three pieces of bone that are joined together by cartilage to enable it pass through the birth canal. This explains the reason behind the soft spots found in the baby's head. These three pieces of bone would eventually join to make one solid bone.

Usually, a baby's skeleton is made up of mainly cartilage. I talked about this when I wrote about why babies are not borne with patella. As a baby grows up, a process known as ossification takes place in his body. Ossification is a process during which the cartilaginous bones of a baby fuse together to form one born. So, by the time he has grown into adulthood, the skeletal would have just 206 bones.

That's it. If you are still surprised, you really don't need to, because what I have just treated here is the real deal.

Thanks for reading.
