Playing The Long Game On Hive

A couple of days ago, something astounding happened... On a typical day, I like to leverage my audience on legacy social media for the benefit of LeoFinance and Hive. Since I started over there years before creating my space on the blockchain, I have a much larger follower base over my many social media accounts.

Incubation

I had left a tweet and was about to go when I decided to check my stats as I am wont to do. And there it was... Someone had retweeted a tweet I wrote inviting them to join me in my new home. The amazing thing? The tweet was posted four years ago in 2018, and was an invitation to join me on Steemit.

Since tweets are indexed by Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search engines (just like web pages), I've long advocated for my fellow Hiveians to blog with them in mind. I regularly get responses to tweets posted months ago, and it's one of the reasons I keep chugging along even when my posts don't always gain much traction here on Hive.

After I ran into financial difficulties early in the year (just as things were humming along), I had to liquidate assets so that me and the terminal relative I support could get by. This robbed me of the growth and influence my account had built up since I "staked my claim to the blockchain" way back in July, 2017 after over a year of lurking on the then nascent Steemit.

This is one of the reasons I tell new (and old) people here not to get lost in the singular focus on whale upvotes. That's like chasing a Unicorn sighting. It's amazing when it happens, but it comes and goes like the wind. Build your presence on Hive with that larger outside audience in mind.

The search engines are your friends.

Use them to help grow on Hive.

Taking Flight

If you spent six hours writing an amazing post and almost nobody on Hive saw it, don't despair. Keep that bigger picture in mind. Remember; a post I wrote over four years ago, is still having an impact.

Your posts are being seen. That's what you need to keep top of mind.

If tweets on Twitter are being indexed by Google, it makes sense that Threads are on LeoFinance. And the sooner that other front-ends start hooking Threads into their services, the larger that influence will be. See how exciting this is?

I'm pumped about the future of LeoFinance in general and Threads in particular. The same can be said for the ever-growing resource we have right here in LeoGlossary.

So if I write a post and it gets "only" $0.02 in upvotes, trust me, I'm grateful that it got any at all. That's $0.02 more than I went to bed with. Until I'm able to build up my Hive and Leo Power, my account won't be as attractive to potential upvoters as some others are, so that's why I keep showing up, stacking, (and staking), those tokens.

But I also know that my work here is being shared to a much larger audience outside of Hive, and will keep showing up in search results for many years to come, just like that post I wrote in 2018. So keep building on Hive and don't ever give up! :)

Nicely said. I think being creative continuous does it too. Sometimes one has to be vested with their presence and their goals too. Aa for whale votes, well, building solely on it would be tantamount to failure, just like you've pointed out.

Indeed, but building your stake up is important as well, to be able to give back to other great content creators. Even so, I was shocked to see a four-year-old post continuing to provide value.

Little things matter too. That graphic with the eggs at the top took almost 45 minutes to get it just right. Those little tweaks allow our creativity to shine through, and is a very rewarding aspect of blogging on Hive.

Haha sometimes it takes crazy level of work to get just the right graphical representation of the right header. Sometimes mine can take up to an hour, it's safe to say there's work in being a content creator.
Building one's stake is the most important of everything. This is because, people take one more seriously when they're building

Most new accounts get discouraged and leave when they don’t get the support they think the communities and whales owe them, or the support they see other oldies get. They forget that it took those people also a long time to build that kind of reputation and trust from the community to get those votes.

I believe we just need to keep bringing value and building out account in terms of HP and the rest will come organically. I like what you said about keeping in mind that your posts are seen, and the going to bed analogy. Great job, man.

Thanks. :) Right though? Who in the hell would I be to expect somebody to upvote my content with 322 HP? :) I'm thankful for any support at all as I rebuild. I think people here know that that's exactly what I'm doing, and I won't stop till I'm back where I was at the beginning of the year and will keep going.

BTW, you're not seeing me as much lately as I've had an offer on a new project. It's not the one I mentioned to you, but something else that I can't really talk about yet. It is exciting to be able to continue creating and expanding my horizions as a content creator.

Rebuilding takes time and I’m glad you see that. I’m sure everyone sees how relentless you are in your quest back up. You’ll get there again in no time, I’m sure of it.

I understand that your absence lately must’ve been because of something you couldn’t control, that was why I didn’t ask this time. I hope the project is going great.

You brought up some really good points to the table... Just one more "side effect" of a well-written quality post on HIVE... As it will stay forever out there, you can't get upvotes after those 7 days, but if someone finds your old post and like it, it still can click on your profile, check what you are doing currently, follow you, upvote new posts, etc...

As you said, it is worth creating and building up your profile... It will not last only 7 days, it lasts forever!!!

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!

Hey man, thanks so much. I've been on my main Twitter account for at least a decade, and I've seen responses to old tweets come in months and months later.

I used to spend hours each day on Twitter, and am slowly transitioning over to Threads. When I found out that tweets are indexed by Google, it was off to the the races to use them to promote Hive.

People can get so caught up in that 7-day number that they forget that we're in this for the long term to grow Hive. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he's reading your post right now! :)

Very well said!

I used to chase those massive upvotes too. I mean, who wouldn't want it right? But I am not too concentrated much on it.

It may be disappointing to see our "quality" posts that we worked for hours (mostly days in my case) getting few upvotes but if we continuously work on evergreen content, then we will one day reap the rewards for it and I am not only talking about the financial aspect.

As for me, I am already starting to see a lot of things that I can contribute to our Hive and that is what I am starting to focus on. 😊

Couldn't have said it better myself. :) Keeping my head down and focusing on the content has made me a better writer, which benefits not only myself, but the platform as well.

An opportunity came my way recently because my blogging on Hive was noticed off-chain. So that old adage that "Good things come to those who wait" did come true!

Thanks for the support, now let's go see what you're blogging about! :)

Writing has been one of my weakness and it is one of the main reasons why I decided to take on blogging. I still find it challenging but I am far better now as compared when I started a year ago. 😊

Congratulations. This is indeed an inspiring experience.

That's awesome! This is part of building passive income (or at least an increase in followers). Let your content work for you over time, and repeatedly.

It's one thing for Google to index tweets made using Twitter. It's another thing to win at SEO using Twitter. Would it also help to have Hive content funnel into a Web2 blog and have Google index the Web2 blog too? I was thinking this may be another way to play the long game on Hive, but I don't know if it makes sense to do that.

I have seen double listings on Google over the years. Some people are so good at it that they can dominate the upper reaches of that valuabe first page of Google.

Since most people rarely search beyond the first three pages, that's where we want to be found.

During the Steemit days, people laughed at Jerry Banfield and his super-long posts, but I kept finding his stuff in Google search terms.

This is why I think we need to focus on rewarding long-form content as we do short-form, as those meatier blog posts containg lots more data for Google to crunch through.

It may not be something that everyone can do, as we need our short-form kings as well. But I think if we ignore long-form content on Hive, we do so at our own peril.
