New Generation Oura Ring

I got that new new Oura generation 3 on my grubby little fingers.

Biohacking cult has got its hands on me and I was a believer only after owning the previous Gen 2 ring for mere 6 months. I really enjoyed tracking my basic activity, sleep, resting heart rate and temperature with the ring and seeing how different lifestyle choices effect those. I think data like this, from a long period of time, could potentially be super helpful if you get any health problems and have to go to the doctor. I for sure would show my data so the doctor can get a better insight on what my heart rate looks like on a daily basis, instead of just the one single measurement in the office. This ring is expensive, but if you are interested in what goes inside your body and understand that you yourself are responsible for your health, I think it really is worth the money.

The Gen 2 ring was lacking on some departments but now with some extensive research and magic they've managed to fit some more amazing features inside this tiny and stylish little thing. All of the new features have not been rolled out yet, but I still decided to get the new ring as soon as it was on pre-sale. They had this really attractive deal where those who had bought their previous ring less than a year ago, I believe, got a nice discount. Mine was 75€ off, with the addition of a free lifetime membership, since they now will be charging a monthly fee for the new ring if you want all the features.

I was most interested in seeing my daytime heart rate, which is tracked every 5 minutes I think, or on command when ever through the app. Later on you can get an active heart rate monitoring during a workout. Next year they are also rolling out a pulse oximeter, which is going to be interesting.

I've only had the new ring for less than a week and I'm waiting on the rest of the features that should be out late this year and early next year. If you are interested in this topic, I can do another post about the ring once I've used it longer.

I think it would be interesting to learn more of your thoughts about the ring over time. Which things you find most useful and what you've learned.

Oh, the Oura ring! I want one so bad haha all the features and tracked parameters look really useful, especially in the case of medical conditions, as you said, and for athletes too. And they are so stylish! I read on their IG page a while ago that the Gen 3 ring could track more information about women's menstrual cycle. That sounds quite interesting as well, for overall health.

Yeah, I agree! I have none... yet haha. I've been reading that you can request an upgrade of your Gen 2 ring to Gen 3, are you planning on doing that?

I actually already use it for cycle tracking and it's amazing! Oura put out a period prediction, which I think is quite unnecessary, but there are studies and trials going on for more. I use the temperature data from the ring and put it in my Natural Cycles app, even though it might not be adviced to do so yet. The ring does not give absolutes but it gives +/- deviation from your average, so I did some calculations of my own using the Natural Cycles data I had collected to find out my baseline. I do believe that in the near future it will all be synchronised between the apps. From my own tests for the past 6 months, the ring is more accurate than just taking your temperature in the morning, obviously since the Oura temp is an average taken once every minute while you sleep.

That's very interesting! I'll look into the Natural Cycles app. I recently stopped taking oral contraceptives after 2 consecutive years of them, so I'm looking forward to reconnecting with my body and its natural production of hormones.

Good for you, I hope you get back on track soon. The mood swings, bloating, spotting, stress of trying not to forget the pill etc are so not worth it!

Thanks! I couldn't agree more. The side effects I'd been having were pretty harsh on me. I didn't feel like myself anymore and the depression had gotten way worse. But the future looks brighter now! I intend on taking a lot more care of my nutrition, lifestyle, etc. to help my body autoregulate.

Would love to hear more about it. Esp the heart rate monitor and pulse ox. I've used a pulse ox thing on my finger quite a bit, but find I knock it off occasionally and it's a bit bothersome. This looks realy cool.
