Beloved - Toni Morrison
I finished this book a while ago and marked it as unread because it felt like I just read the words but i wasn't really immersed in the story, and i don't want to count books that made me feel like that as 'read'.
The writing started me off on a bad foot, and that foot stayed in my mouth for the entire reading process. there was little to no introduction to anything in the book and to understand what was going on in it while I read, I had to look it up on wikipedia.
The story itself is really sad, and I wish that the writing was better. I didn't know much about the slavery period in the united states, but after reading this book I come to the conclusion that it was much worse than i thought it was. i already thought it was bad, but didn't know the extent of what was being done to black people during that time period. I genuinely gasped reading some of the things that happened to Sethe in the book. I don't know how a human being can treat another like that only because their skin happens to have more melanin.
