Don't let the grassy look fool ya.

I found few of those plants growing right outside a car park not too far away from me. I see them often and from a distance they look like those large, decorative grasses people plant in garden. Large, fluffy bushes. Only after I got closer one time I noticed that the leaves are full of tiny little thorns.
Nop... not a grass!

Dasylirion

I am not sure of the exact specie name for this one. I narrowed it down to three: serratifolium, wheeleri and acrotrichum. Which in google they all look very alike.

It is a semi-succulent plant (hope I am not gonna get semi-banned from here for this :P) that grow happily in Mexico southern parts of the United States.

It resembles Agave a lot. Not only in the way it grows and blooms (with one tall flower stalk in the middle), but also because, apparently, some people make booze out of it :)
The flower I saw, but missed shooting. Good thing is that unlike Agave it doesn't die after blooming.

The ones we have here seem quite young ones, but if you google it you will find some really impressive old specimens with thick trunks. Some grow upwards and start to look like palm, some crawl on the ground and also look like palms :)) Hope to see the ones here get to that stage.

The leaves are pretty cool - besides the serrated edges, they have dry tips, which is pretty normal thing (I heard a story of some woman cutting them off as she thought they are dying).
They stay green all year round and can withstarnd temperatures below 0 degrees C for short periods of time.

I wonder what sort of tequila can be made out of these guys lol. I remember these as well as agave growing like weeds in Arizona. People would make their own home brews out of the hearts.

Great minds think alike. I hear Agave and I immediately think of Tequila.

I've tasted a few different home brews mostly blanco versions of tequila. Most of them were too strong. It's probably too difficult to wait for añejo to age in wood barrels for the average home brewer.

I've never had the homebrews before. That would be a interesting process to see, I'm not well versed in tequila to be honest. A once in awhile thing for me.

It looks a lot like one of the bromeliads. So weird to read that it's actually asparagus family!

Funny that you mentioned Agave. I was thinking the same thing. Did you notice our conversations always come back to booze? Fine by me!!!

They also remind me of the sawfish. But hey that's a fish and this is a plant.

No clue about the temperature swings on these ones. Plants are search engine knowledge for me but I always like to learn something new and I did today. Thanks.

This looks familiar. I grew up in San Diego, and remember seeing this or something similar. The name "razor grass" comes to mind, although I'm not sure if that's correct.

Hmm.. I am not sure. From a distance it does look like a grass. Did it have those teeth on the sides?

Yes, but... I haven't grown up there in a long time, now.
