She posed for me for a minute.
You have to be fast with those little buggers. Really fast!
Not only they fly like choppers and can stay still in the air for a second just to move unexpectedly a moment after, but also they are small. And skinny. And are way more spooked than lazy bumblebees or busy bees. They will fly away if you get too close.
I was all happy camper shooting some lazy beetles when I saw this hoverfly passing by the flower the beetles were sitting on. I payed no attention to her, since I know I wouldn't be able to catch her anyway. But she sat down about a meter away from me on a grass and was staring.
Challenge accepted, little one!
With each shot I was trying to get closer and closer until I crossed the invisible barrier and puff... she was gone.
I have no idea how @digitalis takes all those macro shots of those flies. He must be an alien :)

These are really cool. Somebody here said that if one likes you it will hover and stay still or even follow you around :) I thought about that and realised it's happened to me before and didn't know what they were. My old house had wasps around trying to build nests sometimes. At first I was suspicious of these little guys. Now I hope to see them .
They are, are completely harmless. I would be afraid of the wasps though.
I have picked your post for my daily hive voting initiative, Keep it up and Hive On!!
Thanks a lot!
Hiho.
What your doing is the same as me. i slowly get closer. sometimes the insect flies away. sometimes not. just maybe am lucky or i was in the right place and right time, with the right insects :) dont give up. do it more often and you will eventually get your wish :)
When oh when??
I'll just watch yours in the meantime :P
A lovely shot here!
Thanks Sir Stephen :)
My pleasure Lady Eve!
Wow! I'm always very fascinated by naturalistic photos like these. So beautiful :)
Thank you! I love shooting all the little bugs :)
Just... Wow... ;)
Thanks :D
I think most of those flying insects are hard to photograph, you've done a great job, congratulations.
Thank you! Some are just way more camera-shy than others :)
