Snowberries are ready for winter.

Snowball berries 5.jpg

I have always liked these little white berries. In the late fall, when most trees and mushes lose their leaves, they stay like little white ornaments on dark, skinny twigs.
I used to pop them when I was little. They are very juicy and make a funny cracking sound when stepped on. :p

Symphoricarpus albus

They are also called snowberries, which makes a lot of sense. They also stay on the bush throughout the winter and blend with the snow.

Native to North America, they seem to quite like European weather too and can be found. I often see the bush being used as a hedge or as a decoration bush in parks. Many grow freely in woods, such as this one here.

The flowers are small and pink, and I am sure I have seen them before. Much smaller than the berries and kind of hide among all the green leaves. The berries are the most attractive part.

They are poisonous to humans, so do not even try to eat them. They shouldn't kill you, but they will cause vomiting.

Despite that, some animals do feed on them in the winter, and many birds rely on them as food sources.

Birds will wait to eat the fruits until after the berries have frozen, which may break down some of the toxins. This is a late winter “starvation time” food for them.

The bush I found on my walk still had the leaves on, but when they all drop, it will look really pretty.

You can see a blackberry bush tangled in between. It is a thick and nasty mess. A great hideout for smaller birds and insects.

And don't foregut the wild roses. Add them too, because the thorns on blackberries are not enough. :p
Lovely mess!

The rosehips are very good to make tea and they are packed with vitamin C. Just saying :)

I have never seen this white berry in real life. I believe our weather would not even support the growth.

They actually look too beautiful to be poisonous. Looks can be deceptive.

I got a lot of rosehips from the botanical garden last autumn and had them dried for tea and if I ever catch a cold or flu. I even tasted some right on the spot and they were sweet, sour and rich in vitamin C with small seeds and mild yellowish to red nectar in them. Tasty ! Thanks for reminding me! BTW: when we were kids, our parents always told us while we played outside not to eat snowberries because it can causes us ...death...I was so afraid of them but use to pop them in my fingers with other kids just for fun :) ....memories

I think I read somewhere that rosehip have some tiny fur inside that can irritate when eaten raw? Did you notice it?

No one ever told me not to eat it :p I am lad I wasn't tempted :D I did pop a lot of them though!

Yes, they do have some small fur and I try to eat the margins of them because of that reason.

Mother Nature's version of snowballs to make tiny snowmen! ⛄🍃⛄ Snowberries look like fruit dipped in decadent white chocolate.

Beautiful images! @ewkaw

Snowberries, I see them for the first time now, here. That is curious, they are poisonous to humans, but when they freeze the toxins break down - and then the birds eat them. Smart birds. 👏

Why cant humans eat them frozen them? :P

I was also wondering about that
You think we should try them, frozen...? Or better just to leave it as enigma 😂

I would leave them for the birds. Frozen or not.
I am sure someone would already try them by now and said they are delish.... or not :p

I've never seen anything like it. It's interesting to be poisonous when it's attractive to touch just out of curiosity. It's something new to me. I liked what you shared today. ✨

I have been touching them a lot and I am ok. Just do not eat it :p

I love your snowberries. I have never seen them before that I remember. Some of the last photos of them reminded me of miniature marshmallows when they weren't really close up.

When I look at all the articles that you publish regularly I find a lot of plants that are common to me, the snowberry is also one of them as well as the rosehip... Speaking of the rosehip I didn't know it was edible, I looked on the web and saw lots of processed recipes to consume it, thank you for the information it's valuable. I imagined the Portuguese drying rack with other species of plants. Sometimes the ideas in mind are not always good hahaha.

Both are quite widespread and can be found in many countries.
And yea, rosehip is pretty amazing thing to pick and have :)

How are you dear friend @ewkaw
What a beautiful specimen, I have never seen anything like that in those places; Snowberries make a lot of sense, due to their appearance and the time of year they are found.
Thank you very much for giving us this beautiful wild plant.
You have a happy afternoon
