Something for the birds - Goji berry bush

Goji berry pl 3.jpg

My mum has a quite nice-sized garden with all kinds of flowers, herds, fruits, veggies... you name it. It is a pretty wild space, and many things grow as they want with not too much room for new plants. As soon as there is a spot, it is occupied by something new.

So as soon as a big mush died (or was relocated, I can't remember), I decided to buy a small Goji berry plant as a gift, so she could plant it there and wouldn't have to buy them anymore.

It seemed like a good plan. We read about the care of trimming, when to pick the berries, and all the fun stuff.

Guys... this plant is almost unmanageable and grows like a weed! It has extremely fast growth and will climb on anything. It's kind of cool if you have a room for it, and it gives tons of fruit. At least you get something.
IF you manage to get something :p

The flowers are pretty, about 1,5 cm across, and will bloom from spring to late fall almost constantly producing fruits.
And boy, do bees love it! I was standing next to the bush for a while and I could hear all the buzzing. It was harder to catch them among the mess though.

I would love to be able to share some shots of the little red berries hanging on the bush too, but that task was almost impossible. As soon as they mature, the birds would eat them all :D

So the idea of having oatmeal with your own goji berries for breakfast didn't work.

Here is a bonus shot of a furry companion. He would follow me, but wouldn't let me pet him. Only my mum is allowed :)
He has extremely fluffy tail and gorgeous orange eyes.

I love the idea of having a large space for plants to develop, your mother is blessed to have this space. I have never seen this plant before, dear friend @ewkaw, and what beautiful flowers they have, without a doubt the birds will be the ones who enjoy it. its fruits
Thank you very much for letting us know about this beauty.
Have a beautiful afternoon

It is a cool plant. Just getting too big and no use really for us. Just for the birds.

I have no idea what Goji is, Ewkaw. But you have given me an idea.

A berry... like a cherry, I saw, also known as a Tibetan cherry. 😝 This sounds like a song what I just wrote. It's got rhythm and everything. 🤣

Nice cat. 😻

I think they can be bought as dried berries in a shop. They are also often added to muesli mixes.

hahaha berry song :D

I just wish people could import things more and more every day to see if we have variety. Because for example muesli, since the pandemic I don't see it. That's what I used to like to have for breakfast. With yogurt.

Lovely purple flowers. I have never seen a giji plant before. It would have indeed been lovelyif you could show us the berry on the plan. I hope your mom got at least a few from the tree.

Maybe she did try a few, but most is eatten before they get picked. The birds know to be faster than a human :D

Lovely kitty. So glad we don’t have that fast growing berries here. We have so many kinds of crazy weeds here!

When I first saw the photo, I thought of deadly night shade, I didn't realise they are in the same family, but the resemblance is high. The sneaky little birds! Is there any way that you could try cover the bush with a netting big enough for the bees to get through but small enough that the birds can't?

Your kitty meow friend is gorgeous. I love long haired cats, they have the sweetest personalities. I know that sounds weird, but short haired cats don't have the same vibe at all.

Oh it is similar! I have seen them growing around.

The net could work if the bush was smaller I think, though I know some people cover all trees to save the fruits. I think my mum wanted to get rid of it completely as it takes too much space, so for now the birdies enjoy it :)

Haha, planting something for its fruits and ending up feeding some wild animals, is the story of my life :)

Maybe a net over the bush would discourage the hungry birds.

At least the blooming is beautiful and you had the chance to take some lovely pictures!

The net would probably work. The bush is very big tough and all over the place. Would have to be trimmed a lot first to make it easy... few times a year :p

Yea... they eat grapes, cherries and sunflower seeds too :D
