The short lived Iris

Blue Iris garden pl helios 4.jpg

I remember many, many years ago this plant was just a tiny bush with a few of the flowers blooming in late spring.
With time they they grew to a really nice bunch! It has been split in the meantime to plant in another part of the garden and it is still pretty big.

Out of all the Irises - this is my absolute favorited. It has smaller flowers and doesn't grow as tall, but the colour! I don't know many flowers (African Violets maybe) that have this intensive navy blue shade.

The flowers so not last very long so obviously I had to take some photos. I use my brothers Helios 40-2 since I didn't have my camera with me.
The colours from this lens and the bokeh amazes me every time. Old, manual lens with such amazing sharpness. After you get the hang of it is a pleasure to use.

So yea.. I probably overdid it with photos a tiny bit (besides the ones here there was plenty of blurry ones not even artistic, just shit that ended up in a bin already), but it just doesn't happen every day.

Soon the flowers will fade and will be replaces by other flowers growing around (poppies, roses, sunflowers...)

Below you can see another iris in the far back. It is one of those with very bog flowers. The flower stem keeps growing new buds at the top and even though the blooms will fade withing two or three days, another one pops at the top. This one has this very warm, brown colour. Very pretty!

Yep, definitely my fav.
I took a section with me to Portugal once, but it didn't want to grow. I'd love to have a bunch like this in a pot...

They are beautiful 😊
Too bad they didn’t work in Portugal. Maybe one day…
Have a great new week 👋🏻

Thank you! They really are.
I will probably try again when after I kill some other plants and make some room. It might be that they need big, spacious pot to grow well.

Thank and have an awesome week yourself :)

You are welcome, I love the deep purple colour they can have.
No idea what the best ways to keep them are. Maybe it is a bigger pot. One can always try 😉
Thanks a lot. Enjoy yours.

They’re gorgeous. I forget how short they live. Not even sure if I took some captures of mine’s before I realised they were all gone.

I agree, that shade of navy blue is one of a kind 🥰

It is a shame though... you cut some to put in a vase and in no time they are gone leaving this ugly, mushy petals behind.

Yeah, not cool. I just let them grow in my garden and hope to take pictures before they end their short life ☺️

Do they have fragrance too? The very big ones (yellow and brown) my mum has have very nice scent.

You know that I never sniffed them? I just assume they don’t have a scent and now no way to find out until next year 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't know much about these flowers, the color is a bit like the butterfly pea flower that we have here in Cambodia. It's often dried and mixed with tea leaves to give a pleasing tint to the tea water. Do these flowers have any similar uses?

Oh I know the flower you are talking about. It does give amazing colour.
I don't know if Irises have any use in the kitchen actually. Never heard of any. For us they just look pretty in the garden.
