ENPL
The National Museum of Ancient Art (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga) in Lisbon holds a huge collection of paintings (over 2000), pottery, jewellery, sculptures, etc. All spread on three quite spacious floors that you can wander around for hours.
Beautiful place and quite an impressive collection. But some things carve themselves into our memory more than others. And this painting is one of them. I could, of course, drop it a post together with other paintings, but it would get lost there. And I don't think it should :)
Szkoda by było :)

The Hell

Unknown master

ENPL
It is not the biggest of them; some paintings had very impressive sizes (similar can be seen in some Lisbon churches covering huge parts of walls), but it is one of the few fully devoted to describing what Hell looks like. And after you wander around the corridors with all kinds of saints, kings, and pretty faces, this one (and few others too) does stand out.

ENPL
Torture, pain, and slow agony (because obviously you go to Hell alive). All that to scare people enough to follow the church. Did it work? Probably considering all the still-existing religions.
I find it quite fascinating how the artist's imagination worked and how he managed to put it all together with so much detail on one canvas.
Good job, Unknown Man.
Dobra robota, Nieznany Artysto.

Bonus song:

Spotify does those mixed playlists (like YouTube) based on what we have listened recently. Once in a blue moon I play one of those to see what new it will suggest, or what forgotten song it finds.
And this is how I ended up here.

A long forgotten song that led me to the whole album that I did not hear in years.

Simple Minds - River Of Ice
year 1991

Before you play - turn the lights off,
put your headphones on,
close your eyes..

enjoy..
:)

Hmm, this is deep. Considering all these, people would be scared to death even before the actual death comes. Taking a look at the picture, i think it is there just create fear in the people. has any seen hell before? I don't think so. The image is just one of the thing to control human mind.

Hell? Looks like a wellness center to me. There is aromatherapy, massages, hot bath, acupuncture and stretching. Even some dental hygiene down on the left. 😁

How are you dear friend @ewkaw good night
What a great collection of works, you have to have time to see more than 2000 works
Beautiful works, although I must admit that it is a little creepy for my tastes
I take this opportunity to wish you a splendid weekend

niezły tam mają bajzel!
i żadnej prywatności.

Definitely a very "eloquent" work of art... I imagine that this is where some of our politicians will end up if they continue acting as they have been doing!... :))

Thanks for sharing @ewkaw friend!

This unknown artist really did a good job putting it all together! So much details, so many things happening all at once.
This Hell sure scared me a little. Not of the torture but of the faces of those torturers 😅

In a time where drawings are the only form of visual manifestation of ideas and thoughts, a painting that well painted must have scared the shit out of people!
