Meditation - Meditación

He reacted between the slaps that Marcos gave him on the face. Stumbling he stood up and walked away from his friend. He tried to calm his breathing without much success as she glared at Marcos. -What the hell was that?- He asked at last. In her mind, he only wanted to give Marcos what he deserved. –I don't know, Eric, you tell me. It was just a meditation - answered the aforementioned, visibly concerned about the state of his friend. -Just a meditation?- You mean that what just happened was just a meditation? To hell with your meditations - With these words he went to a desk drawers in a corner and took out a pack of cigarettes. Still with an unsure step he prepared to leave the room. He knew that if he stayed there he would make a Marcos porridge. Shortly after he was outside. He leaned over the wall and looked at the apparent stillness of the city. He always considered it fortunate that the Social Affairs office was on the top floor and that it had that open-air terrace, observing the metropolis from that height helped calm his nerves. It did not fit in his head how he had allowed himself to be coaxed with all that paraphernalia about spiritual travel, relaxation and of course, meditations that Marcos preached. But he had agreed, of course his friend and co-worker had been insisting on it for a long time, although he was never attracted to those fallacies. He considered that life was only one, that of flesh and blood and that was where the true reality resided: working like an animal to stay alive. The door was flung open and Marcos appeared in it. -You have to tell me what happened.- I have to assume that you were really following my voice and that means ... Eric's hand with the negative gesture prevented him from continuing. -Well, I'll leave you alone.- With these words Marcos retraced his steps. Eric, took a cigar out of the package and lit it with shaking hands. He took a deep breath and continued to gaze at the horizon.

Of course he had followed Marcos's voice, he couldn't deny it and he had felt in that place flowered and stirred by a gentle breeze, aware that he could interact with all that. Touching the flowers, the leaves and scaring away the colorful butterflies had been part of his "journey" and somehow he was able to feel what was around him. But suddenly another voice had been heard over Marcos's words. Yes, his friend had described the path to the right and urged him to continue on the main path, but he missed the passage that opened to the left. Yes, his friend had described the path to the right and urged him to continue on the main path, but said nothing about the passage that opened to the left. In that direction the landscape was no longer so bright and dark nuances loomed in the distance, but that ... but that other voice had been heard with total clarity in his consciousness, "Over here, Eric." Where did it come from? It was impossible to know, just as it was impossible for him to explain how he was in that place. But curiosity overcame his prudent judgment so he wandered off down the murky path. After a few steps, Marco's voice stopped being heard and his journey was at the mercy of that new voice. He couldn't tell if it was a male or female voice ... although perhaps he could conclude that it was more feminine. Shortly after, the day had turned into gloom and he found that the road was entering through a huge cavern He had been afraid, of course, that was a typical nightmare scene, but it was difficult to resist the insistence of that voice. So he had gone on his way. After several steps in the middle of a darkness that only allowed him to see a few meters away, he found himself with what seemed to him the center of the cavern. From where he stood it loomed like a huge room. The voice seemed to have fallen silent, but she understood that this was the place she wanted him to go so badly. With suspicious steps he advanced the last meters that separated him from the great room, but something had made him stop, a kind of energy seemed to protect the entrance into which the path ended, it was easy to see inside, but it took place through the transparency of that energy. Fearful of what might happen, he reached out his hand and to his amazement that thing fell back, exposing the entrance. At that time the fear of the unknown was preying on him and he was sure that had he been "in normal life" he would have turned around and ran, but an unexpected courage prevailed in this other world. An instant later he crossed the entrance to find himself in that room, the walls carved into the rock emitted reflections that kept the room illuminated, the center was occupied by a huge rock perfectly rounded and carved with openings in the form of doors, what was really scary was the bubbling black cloud that covered the ceiling, that yes there were some, of course. He did not spend long exploring this when a person dressed in a long scarlet dress came running towards him from one of the doors in the central rock. The rush of that being barely gave him time to realize that it was a young woman -You have come for me at last- she said when she reached him, immediately afterwards she passed a hand over his shoulder and ran all over his arm until his hand and he saw how his own body gave off some kind of substance that seemed to evaporate. –Your energy has opened the portal. Come on, we must get out of here because he ... –At that moment the black cloud shuddered above her head and a huge claw emerged from it, landing on the ground shaking the entire room. –Get out of here– was what he managed to say to the young woman, pushing her towards the portal through which he had entered a few minutes ago. He did not have time to see how she left the enclosure because a huge face emerged from the most sick nightmares that can bend the sanity of mortals emerged from the cloud and settled next to him scrutinizing him, he could say that it was the face of a vulture But it was also looming as the fearsome face of evil. One eye of the creature was detached and hung to one side of its face and the other was nothing more than a twinkling spark, its cyclopean beak was dotted with multiple fractures in which huge worms could be seen swarming. Suddenly that thing let out a shuddering snore and another claw came to keep the first company. The last thing he saw was how that great peak opened and emitted a thunderous squawk before going for it. And it had been there when he had "woken up" to meet Marcos who was trying to make him react.

He took another puff on his cigarette that had already accumulated a long column of ash. It all sounded like sick madness. The door opened again and his coworker made an appearance again. Eric took another puff on his cigar while still staring at the city. He glanced at Marcos as he advanced across the terrace until he was positioned next to him, looking at the horizon. -I don't think there is so much haze today.

Eric fixed his attention on the smoke that came from his cigar. He had known Marcos Lewis from a personnel transfer they had made to his department five years earlier. And why deny it, he had been a great friend, one of the few that could be achieved in life. He had encouraged her when Barbara, her wife left him taking little Timi with her You cheeky bitch!
That had been, and still was, the most stormy stage of his life. Had he gotten over it? Of course not. Mrs. Miller was what he had loved the most and his little son ... But his great friend had been with him throughout his hardship.
-Yes, I managed to perfectly follow your voice- he said suddenly.
Marcos took a while to assimilate her words.
-Of course," he burst out suddenly- the only way you could have immersed yourself in meditation is if you managed to follow me. But...
-At the beginning, everything was fine.
In the next few minutes, Eric recounted all of his experience.
-Oh rays! I did not imagine that something like this could happen - Lewis reflected after having listened to him. –And you say that a voice interfered with my directions?
Eric tossed the cigarette butt and stomped it with his foot.
At that moment the door opened again. Magda, the secretary appeared in the doorway.
–Mr. Miller, the Real Estate officer is here– she announced.
-Oh damn- Eric grumbled -the old woman is willing to nag me-
–Gajes of the trade –Marco colluded –Well, I suppose the work calls us. I think I'll finish those reports, we'll talk about this later - he said as he left.
-Make him wait in my office- Eric ordered the secretary who was still waiting at the door. He stayed a while longer looking at the city.
A new life. It was what Lewis had proposed after Barbara left him a little less than a year earlier. He must have a new life. But a new life in which he remained longing for his wife and Timi and with tax officials nagging him was not what would be called a new life.
He walked away from the lookout and headed for the door wondering why one public office should bother to turn over tax bills to another public office. He walked through the living room, adjusting his collar and sleeves as he returned the cigarette box to its place on the desk. Lewis was occupying a computer stationed in the corner and gave him a sarcastic gesture of good luck.
When he got to his office, he didn't bother much to look at the "old woman" from Properties who was waiting in the attic. Instead he went straight to draw the window blinds.
-I suppose some clarity wouldn't be bad at all- he said.
His visitor was still silent.
-And I think a little coffee could better enliven our conversation- he announced, recalling that he had not done anything in relation to the tax records that the official had required of him in the last meeting. Yes, it would take more than coffee to soften his temper.
He made two cups of coffee and prepared to face his visitor. But his intention froze and his steps abruptly stopped. The person waiting on the couch was not the Property Clerk, it was someone he had seen that morning. His hands and his whole body began to shake and he was about to spill the coffee. Gathering all of her courage, he returned the coffee cups to her desk.
-We know each other?- he said without looking back with a thin, plaintive thread of voice.
When he got no answer, he laboriously turned to look at the woman. There was no doubt, she was the same girl he had found in that gloomy cavern.
She looked at him for a few seconds before looking down and nodding her head slightly, her face drawing a fleeting smile.

Marcos was enraptured by the work he was doing at the computer when Eric stormed into the room. -It's her Damn it!- It's her. Now her desire to annihilate Marcos was greater. -You better tell me what the hell is going on because this was all your fault.- What are you talking about? - Marcos inquired that he could not understand what was happening. -The old woman from Properties is not the old woman from Properties, she is the woman I got in the cave, in that detour, and in that meditation in which you had the great idea of wrapping me up. At that moment Magda arrived at the room. -I'm sorry Mr. Miller, it was my fault, someone came to look for the lady of Inmuebles and she retired to the races. In her place, I invited that woman to come in and she told me that you and she already knew each other and that it was urgent for your to discuss certain matters. I was going to tell him, but the phone started ringing and ... Fed up with explanations, Miller walked briskly to the desk, pulled out his pack of cigarettes again, and headed out onto the terrace. He leaned against the wall once more, knowing that this time the sight would not reassure him at all. With trembling hands he took a cigar out of the pack and took a match. Only after several attempts did he manage to turn it on. What was happening escaped any logic. How could it be explained that someone from a dream (which was what meditation seemed to him now) was in his office and claimed to know him? and he was sure that if he asked her she would inevitably mention the events of the meditation. -Demons! Demons! Demons! He should never have been persuaded by Marcos. He took another puff at the cigar that was shaking uncontrollably between his fingers. He imagined that at any moment a monumental claw would land on the terrace and that the hideous beak of that infernal bird would come to finish his work. At that moment he was startled by the violence with which the door opened and how Marcos rushed towards him.

-She's an Omega, Eric.-

Miller gave him a sideways glance.
-What the hell are you talking about? - Inquired he making efforts to contain the fury that was now beginning to overcome her confusion.
-Listen to me, Eric. There are people with a completely active life in the spiritual world, in fact, unlike us, their spiritual life is the main one, they act like humans only to obtain what is necessary to keep their body alive and they do not need meditations or other mechanisms to pass from one plane to another.
Eric tried to focus on the embers his cigar was burning on. The words of his friend still made no sense.
–And according to the power they have in the spiritual world, they are being absorbed by certain clans.
Lewis was thoughtful for a moment.
-But the Omega are a very rare clan. Not much is said about its members. No one is known to have come across them in meditation. I've only read that they make up one of the most powerful clans in the universe. Besides that they ...
Marcos stared at him carefully.
-... they only interact with other Omega, Eric.
-Oh, Marcos, I don't want to keep hearing bullshit. I just want to know why someone I saw in a dream, or whatever you call it, is in my office.
-I do not know. I can't know everything. I suppose that while she was a prisoner she could not return to the physical world, or at least not fully, but upon being released ... Finding you is another part of the story. And according to what she just told me, you will have to ensure her integrity.
-What the hell are you saying? - Eric inquired, going over to him.
Fortunately, Marco was quicker and managed to slip away from the threat nimbly.
-Only while he regains his power. - he answered now at a safe distance from Miller - The creature you see is called Ascarot and it is one of the seven lords of Reha. I have read some of them, they are supposed to have accumulated their power from the negative energies released in both worlds and they prowl the limits of certain spiritual planes. She was imprisoned in her domain and her power was not enough to free herself and she was weakening little by little until you ... I ...
Miller still couldn't make the slightest sense of it all.
-You'll have to talk to her- Lewis continued as he walked away from he -By the way, her name is Laura and, as you may have seen, she is a real beauty.
Eric watched him go trying to digest everything he had said. He turned again to contemplate the city. The route 25 bus was waiting its turn with another conglomerate of cars to cross the congested Lion Avenue, at the same time a lot of pedestrians crossed the grated of the street in one direction or another.
He tapped the package and pulled out a new cigar while he thought about how he would face the woman waiting in his office. He prepared the fire and managed to light the cigar on the first try, although the tremor caused by the emotions of the day had not completely disappeared. He brought the cigar to his lips, but gave up the attempt. He focused once more on the congested stoplight and tried to blank his mind. He was unsuccessful. He tried again to take a sip of his cigar, but thought better of it and tossed it on the floor as he headed for the door. Much later he would understand that this had been the last cigarette he would light in his mortal existence and that from that morning on a new life had begun for him.

-Oh, Marcos, no quiero seguir escuchando patrañas.

No tuvo éxito.
