Learning something that makes me a better person EN/ES.

Hello everyone...

Greetings catharsis community, here I come to share great teaching of life that after 23 years I have finally been able to fully understand because as the saying goes, one understands it when one lives it in the flesh.

Since I was a child my family taught me that no matter my social status or how much money I have in my wallet or the bank, I should never treat with contempt or humiliate other people who do not have my position. And although I have never really had enough money to say that I am rich or have a high social status, the truth is that I have had to struggle with the negative thoughts of belittling others in other ways.

For example, a few days ago my wife and I were in a supermarket in the capital of the state where we live, normally it is a supermarket where people with high social status do their shopping but also anyone who has the need can shop, and although in this type of supermarkets or hypermarkets some things have a higher value than where I live, I like to shop in these markets for their wide variety of items.

Of course, my wife and I when we went into that market did not have much money, as we had made several necessary purchases and had about $3 left in the account, so we bought some ham, coffee, and cornflour, 3 items that were needed in our home. Now the unpleasant part of this story was when I was about to pay for my purchase, I was already at the cash register and the girl who attends was going to scan them and suddenly a somewhat rude lady, pushed my purchases to put theirs, considering that I had to wait because I had less.

That was a very tense moment since it was my turn and I see absolutely nothing wrong in paying for only 3 items in a hypermarket, so what that lady did bothered me since I felt discriminated against, and although I did not react in a bad way at that moment since I thought it was not worth it. While she was paying for her purchases I started to reflect if I had ever done the same thing with someone else and that like the lady, I had also discriminated against someone else. And I concluded that on different occasions I have done it and that somehow I did not apply what I had been taught as a child.

For example, in my case I have discriminated against people who have asked me for money or food in the street, I answer them in a bad way like "Go to work" or "Aren't you ashamed to be asking?" and although from my point of view I may have a reason or something valid to respond in that way to the person who asks me, the reality is that I know nothing about that person or the situations that led that person to ask for money or food in the street.

Many of these people have had to flee their homes because of physical or sexual abuse by family members or they are also people who grew up without anyone showing them true love or any kind of protection. And this type of abuse and lack of care creates a person with feelings of worthlessness or abandonment and that is why they live on the street. Others have gone through various difficult experiences such as the loss of their jobs or the death of a loved one and the sadness and depression that has caused them to live on the street or others are addicted to drugs or their parents abandoned them on the street to their fate.

Of course, there are also many other situations that maybe I am not taking into account, but the point of it all is to try to put yourself in their shoes, how would I be if I lived in that situation? Would I find a way out? Thinking about what I would do if I were like that has made me reflect on what these people go through every day, how they endure all those scorns to get food or money to sustain themselves.

Therefore, this experience left me with an important lesson: nothing I have or own makes me superior to anyone else. We can all go through a similar situation at some point in our lives because life takes many turns. That is why I have decided that every time someone asks me for money or food on the street, I will not respond with contempt or humiliate them in front of people, but rather treat them with kindness and respond in a friendly manner since I do not know the situations that these people have lived through.
