Spring in Southampton Common

Really, I have no idea where did the name of this park come from? The Common. The most common name you can think of… It even gave the name to the music festival that happened here a few years back - ‘The Common People’ festival. Not that I attended, but just dropping that fun fact here.

While Southampton is not really the most common place on Earth. Many people recognise the name Southampton staright away, as this is where Titanic sailed from on its last, tragic journey. And who didn’t hear of Titanic?

The Common park is also a home to a very old cemetary, dating before 1st World War.

It holds many uncommon stories that my friend, Laleh often tells me as we walk along the paths between the graves.

But it is also a home to The Common people, who walk, run, sit, chat and gather here every day.

The common people like you and me bring their children here to play in the playground.

That day in spring was not exactly warm, so not that many of the common children were playing here as we walked around.

Its also a home to artists, who like to express themselves on… trees 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Cowherds is a Pub for the common people to gather and enjoy their drink, lunch, dinner and a company of whoever they are meeting here with.

It’s so common, that finding the space to park our cars in front of it is rather rare.

Luckily but there is also an overflow carpark at the back, as well as much bigger (and thankfully free) carparks on the road leading towards the park as well as some roads around the other side of The Common.

That’s where we parked on this occassion and then took this path to walk towards the more central areas of the park.

Of course the flowers were the main subjects of my photos. It was spring after all and in The Common the spring is very colourfull, with various spring flowers popping up in most unexpected places.

As I squatted down to photograph them, I had a volunteer, cute little model.

’Really, you’re taking pics of the flowers while I’m around? I wanna be on them too!’ he thought to himself 😉

Oh, and what do we have here? A bunch of leaves you say? At that moment, sure, but also bluebells waiting to happen in a few weeks from when I took this picture. Which of course have been and gone and now their bulbs are resting underground, getting ready for next spring to come 😁

Crocuses however dominated our walk that day though.

A few snowdrops too! Quite picturesque.

And a few daffodils too!

But mainly crocuses in all the most common colours 😁 Predominantly yellows and purples with an occassional white addition.

I walk in The Common quite often. With my old friend Laleh, with my new friend Ruth and quite often on my own, right after work.

No matter how many times I walked here though, there is always something new and interesting to photograph there, no matter the season.

There is so much hiden detail everywhere, especially at the old cemetary. Leaking tap anyone? I considered it to be the cover for this post, but snowdrops won in the end.

And even a new type of a flower that I don’t know the name of. Does anyone know what it is? I’ve seen it before, but the name somehow never sticks with me.

Or even weirdly shaped trees. I swear I had more pictures of this one, but somehow the other one doesn’t load, so one will have to do for today.

Before I get back to more flowers…

The whole fields of flowers…

And before I go… let me just drop code blue here again. Use it in the comment section below if you’d like me to send you 1 Unit of HSBI. I’ve only just sent the prizes from the last code blue to 2 people who read my words in between the pictures.

Now enjoy the rest of the flowers pictures… As always I took plenty and they’ve been sitting here in this draft for half a year before I finally decided to scroll through them and finish up what I’ve started.

And a few more to wrap this up… just by the road that leads back to the carpark.

Thank you for coming on this spring walk with me guys ☺️

Until next time 💙

Looks like a nice walking park. Lots and lots of flowers and some nice ones at that. Definitely a weird rooted tree but it is cool looking though 😎 Take care 💙

Spring in any country is divine but I sure love snowdrops and bluebells. I love how England really celebrates nature.

Me too 😍 As well as pretty much all spring bulbs. When I lived in Netherlands for a while the spring bulbs shows were pretty spectacular too 😍

Hi @fantagira - Common in the context of The South Hampton Common means fields.
Beautiful spring flowers - I love that time of years as well.
You had a lovely walk with your friend in the Common. 😀

Oh, I never knew this! I learn something new every day 😁

We’ve been going on these Friday lunchtime walks on and off for years with my friend, but haven’t been much over the summer. We just talked last weekend about restarting them 💙

Hey hun! These are the pictures I took long time ago, in spring. Right now there are some flowers still around, but less and less. I still capture a few every day, wherever I go though, as I often use them for threads and I like to have fresh ones every day 😁

Commons get their name because it was 'common' land where anyone could graze their livestock freely.

The mystery flower is a hyacinth.

Your post was beautiful and only a few months until the beautiful flowers start appearing again.

Happy Christmas until then :-)

Mystery solved! About the common… the flower might be from hyacinth family, but not the hyacinth I know, nor has it got the scent I’d recognise 😉

Yes, time seems to be flying these days and spring will be here before we know it.

Thank you for stopping by and enjoying these beauties with me 💙
