Human rights groups have urged Malaysia to investigate conditions at migrant detention centres after the government said 150 foreigners, including seven children, died at the facilities last year.

According to the Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail posits that among the 150 that died in detention, seven (7) were children and women are 25 in number. Although the Minister didn't give details of the causes of their death.

My question is what's the percentage of death of foreigners in detention, when compared to the number of Malaysians in detention? As at last year number of foreigners in detention facilities was 17,703. I know that the reasons of detaining these foreigners varies from one crime to the other. Have these foreigners been tried by the Malaysian court before going to prison, if they've not been tried, the Malaysian government should make it sure to try everyone.

“The fact that so many foreigners, including children, die in immigration custody is a scathing indictment of Malaysia’s failure to treat those they are holding as human beings who have rights,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch.
Amnesty International called on the government to take action to prevent people’s death in detention. “150 deaths in one year. Holistic, transparent investigations now,” Amnesty wrote in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

Every person in the Malaysian detention facilities has rights and such rights should be upheld. Most of them with immigration issues should either by deported back to their country or the immigration issues should be resolved.

“The findings must be made public. Action must be urgent and comprehensive. Remedies must be found, and justice realised for the families of those who died. The government must act Now,” Amnesty wrote.

Findings from activists and people around said that the deplorable state of the detention facilities in Malaysia could lead to death. For instance, the food served inmates are not good enough. The detention facilities are crowded and unhygienic.

Malaysia routinely detains foreigners who are without valid permits, allowing them to remain in the country, including asylum seekers. The country is also home to millions of undocumented migrants and more than 100,000 Rohingya refugees.

Malaysia doesn't accept refugees and do not honour the rights given by the United Nations High Commission of Refugees UNHCR. The UNHCR has been denied access to detention centres since August 2019, hampering efforts to release and resettle asylum seekers, Reuters reported.
