The Dark Side of The Society.

Aunty Faith, the 41 year old woman in my church, she was always in the youth program especially when we have singles retreats, couples day, or relationships seminars.

“Isn’t she too old to be attending programs like this, she should just focus on getting married or probably leave this church and environment.” Grace with the wide mouth said, with her eyes fixed on Aunty Faith.

Modupe gave an angry expression at Grace “Please look away, it’s none of our concerns the program she attends, besides she’s not married so this might be a good thing for her.”

I watch as both of them speak while we the anchor of the program invites the speaker of the day to teach us some things about relationships so we don’t make mistakes while choosing a partner.

The young minister climbed the podium, she was very young, probably in her early thirties. She wore a white blazing gown and a red hat to match. Her make up was well balanced on her face and the red lip gloss seated well on her plump lips. It was shining and I could see it even though I was sitting far from the podium.

She started her teaching, she spoke about love, relationships, sex, and the list went on. I was amazed on how she captured the mind of everyone, even Grace was listening attentively. I looked towards Anuty Faith and I saw her jotting things on her notepad.

The society which I live in can sometimes be harsh on ladies who don’t get married on time. I have known Aunty Faith since I was little, she was a very beautiful lady, everyone loved her and I was sure a lot of guys must have asked her out. So why hasn’t she gotten married. Now, even younger ladies are making fun of her, is something wrong with her? All this thought clouded my mind and I wasn’t concentrating on the teaching going on.

After the seminar was over, I was outside the hall waiting for Grace and Modupe since we do walk home together. From afar, I saw them walking towards me and Grace was laughing in an unusual way while Modupe just kept a straight face.

”Why are you now angry? Is she your sister” Grace said, laughing while poking Modupe.

“What’s going on? Whose sister are you talking about?” I asked because I know Grace to be the trouble maker.

“You won’t believe Grace laughed out loud when Aunty Faith went to greet the speaker” Modupe said with a little sad smile.

“Can you see the way she was bending and greeting her” Grace burst into laughter again.

“I can’t believe you both are still talking about Anuty Faith “

“It wasn’t me who started it, it was Grace” Modupe said and Grace continued to laugh.

I turned to Grace with a serious face this time and her laugh reduced.

“You have just been making jest of someone older than you with more experience. What if something like that happens to you.”

“Only when pig fly” Grace cut me off

“You cant be too sure” Modupe cut in “Do you think Aunty Faith isn’t as beautiful as you too. She’s more pretty than you when she was younger. Look at her, Only when pigs can fly she says. You are feeling so sure of yourself because of that your tiny boyfriend”

This time I could sense anger in Modupe voice and Grace wasn’t having it. So I had to stop them both because it become something else.

“Who wants some ice cream, all bills on me” I said, their expression immediately lightened up a bit. Now, I regretted bringing up the ice creams because I have no choice but to buy it for them.

We all walked to the mall together and the topic changed to the flavor of ice creams they both wanted.

It was after I left the state, about a year after, Anuty Faith got married to a handsome man, and I was really happy for her.

The End.

Wow. Aunty faith is truly beautiful. Wow again. Glad she finally got married to a man of her choice. Marriage is not about being early or late. It’s just about the right person at the right time.

Grace be doing the most. 😂. Let just close her topic here too.

Yeah, marrying right is better than marrying early

Also marriage doesn’t determine a lady’s value, sad our society has taught us the other way round

And for Grace, I won’t talk

It's unfortunate that our society look down on older women who are not married.
Everyone can't be married. It shouldn't be by force. Am glad aunt faith finally found her missing rib. Now wagging tongues can rest, if they wish to.

Now Grace can rest
I haven’t even spoken to her about it in years
Guess she already knows
