Kelly (1 of 6): Humpbuckle Tales 149

Kelly is nine years old.

She calls an ambulance, even though she knows her mother is dead.

She waits in the kitchen, watching Frankie swim around the fishbowl.

She won the goldfish at the arcade. He's her only friend.

The social worker says Frankie can't come to the foster home.

The social worker takes Kelly to a temporary foster home.

The Gentiles are nice, Kelly immediately feels at home.

She helps Mrs Gentile with the laundry.

Kelly likes helping around the house.

Her mother was ill for a long time.

Kelly kept the house clean and tidy to help mum.

Tracie, the social worker, collects her two weeks later.

Kelly doesn't want to leave.

Tracie tells her she'll like the new foster family.

They already have a little girl her age.

It'll be nice to have a friend, won't it?

Kelly dries her eyes and gets out of the car.

The first thing Kelly notices about Heather is her fingernails. They are long and painted.

Kelly's mum used to have nails like that.

Before she got ill.

Heather greets Kelly with a smile and shows her up to her room. There are two beds.

"You'll meet Kathy, later," Heather says.

Kathy pretends to be nice whenever her parents are near.

Frank - Kathy's dad - works nights at the psychiatric hospital, sleeps during the day and is often grumpy.

One afternoon Kathy pours tea leaves and sugar over the kitchen table.

She blames Kelly when Frank wakes up.

Tracie takes Kelly to her mother's funeral.

Kelly worries the casket might be open like she's seen on the telly.

Kelly remembers how her mother looked. Her eyes almost closed, her skin pale grey.

But the simple wooden coffin is shut.

Tracie introduces her to Stan.

"Your uncle," she says.

These are the 148th to 154th fifty-word stories in the Humpbuckle Tales series. You can find all the tales reblogged on the @humpbuckletales account.

These six stories are part of the Humpbuckle Tales series I am writing. Each tale is 50 words long. They can be read individually but when read together they make up a much bigger story. The 6 weekend freewrite stories are an obvious example of this because you can see that one follows on from another. The other tales might not be so obvious as they are sometimes set a few decades earlier or later than the others.

There are author readings available of the first 22 Humpbuckle Tales on the Humpbuckle Tales YouTube Channel or you can listen to the Humpbuckle Tales podcast.

On Hive, you can find the first 10 tales read here, and Humpbuckle Tales 11-22 are read here
