CineTV Contest: Griffith is a magnificent bastard.

I was thinking about taking part in Favorite Film Villain Contest. Berserk is a masterpiece manga that has few different adaptations that include 1997 anime and 3 movies. That is why I thought that this is not a valid entry. But I decided to write about this topic anyway.

Griffith is a young, charismatic leader of the mercenary group called Band of the Hawk. It seems that he is great at anything he does. Swordplay, strategy, game of thrones, philosophy, flirting...He seems to excel in all of them. Griffith is a complex character who has many different sides to him. One moment he can seem like an innocent child and next he calmly dislocates your arm. He can risk his life to save a friend. But he can also be happy at the news that a small child was killed. He starts as a ordinary commoner but rises to a height of nobility and power. He has to overcome many challenges to achieve his goal-get his own kingdom. But at some point his ambition become conflicting with his followers well being and he had to make a choice.

What you loved or hated about it?

I loved Griffith's character because it is very human. He does some terrible things but he is not entirely black or white. Like most humans he is morally grey. He influences to the world around him. But he is also deeply affected by his surroundings.

How it influenced you (and/or people around you)?

Griffith's character showed me what it is a dark fantasy. Some of his actions are a real nightmare fuel. But at the same time I am not sure how many people in his shoes would be able to act differently. And that thought is perhaps scarier than those actions themselves.

Any scene that still pops into your mind?

In this scene Griffith tells a princess that he doesn't consider his followers as his friends. To this day I wonder if he was completely sincere when he said that. Or perhaps it was just a lie he tried to convince to himself?
