A quiet, sort of busy Sunday

Last week, I put out a call on the village community Facebook page for used glass jars. I prefer to re-use. I have been happily inundated and part of the weekend and coming days involves sorting, sizing and then cleaning. Then it either filling or storing.

Those I can't use - I collect jars of the same volume and shape for particular lines - because either they won't seal or because they're too different or uncommon, are sent for recycling.

Among this batch, jars are destined to be filled with - yes, marmalade, pickle, and chilli jam. And that's just for starters.

I can't remember when last I made a bobotie. At least two years, I think. Then I did. Partly because a villager who's been ill and whose vegan daughter is staying with her asked at the market, "Are you still doing meals?"

The short answer, "No".

Then it came out. It's about meat and having more than just smoothies. The deal: I bear her in mind when I plan the week's cooking. Some meals are easily extended to include a third, or, by their very nature, feed more than two. As it was with the oxtail, last week.

Although, this time, she didn't order, I was not only pleased with the practise, but also with the outcome. I shall do it again.

As an aside: this is a dish my British mother never cooked. It was a regular feature of boarding school and university fare. Perhaps a story to tell at some point.

About the oxtail recipe: it's on my list. I have been distracted not only by marmalade musings, but also events in South Africa, and about which I am writing. It's getting the "Fiona treatment" so it's taking a while.

Until next time, be well

I use glass cans again, too.
Especially those cans with carvings on them.

I keep all my glass bottles, only the ones with stubborn lables end up in the glass recycling bin. Funny how Bobotie also doesn't feature too often on my menu, yet we enjoy it when I do make it;)

I've learned that the stubborn labels come off (not only with elbow grease), but also hot water and turps... Oh, and a knife for scraping. I wonder why we don't do it that often - bobotie? I know that one of the reasons for me is because I don't like plain rice. Also, it's not something I can make out of my head. Stay warm: it's going to be a vrekkoud 11 here today!
