An Easter Reprieve. Sort of

For the first time in a long time, I sat on the stoep, Rambo not far away, watching the sun set and waiting for the President to address the nation. They have been pretty regular, these family meetings, in the last year.

Autumn, my favourite season, is upon us. Last year, we were robbed of it, but a year later, Covid numbers, hospitalisations and deaths, for the moment are declining. This means that although there have been calls for a precautionary lockdown, it's not justified.

The country's brains have, as a consequence, given permission for somewhat larger religious gatherings but bottle stores will close for the full four days of the Easter weekend.

Pubs, bars and restaurants continue to trade and the 12 midnight to 4 am curfew remains in place.

For our village, both of these somewhat paradoxical developments, are good news. The annual Easter traditions go ahead and our restaurants and pubs will benefit from the visitors we know are coming.

I do hope, though, that sensibility prevails: mask, social distancing and moderation. One super-spreading event and the third wave is a dead cert. Pun intended.
