Tuesday "trials"

I cooked lunch yesterday. The wind was howling: it was a south easter which is the spring/early summer wind. That may be, but it blows from across the cold Benguela current that comes from deep in the Arctic. It was cold. So.

I baked avocado with lime and chilli and whicwith the remaining naan bread made a great, light lunch on a cold day. Before I came across this recipe, the thought of warm avocado didn't appeal. Now, I don't make it often enough. Mainly because I rarely cook in the middle of my working day.

This would also make for a great hors d'oeuvre.

Then I headed back into the office and emerged to prepare the supper.

Plan B

Supper should have been fish. It wasn't because the fish was vrot. And I had planned to cook it all (6 fillets) and make fish cakes with some of it.

There is not much worse than the smell of rotting fish.

Perhaps what could be worse is making the discovery just as you start supper. And the cupboard is bare because the next day is shopping day and defrosting something will ruin it.

In the garden: Swiss chard. In the vegetable rack: potatoes and onions.
In the fridge: homemade cottage cheese and white cheddar; the makings of a green salad.

The result? A quick potato, spinach and two cheese bake. Which, we agreed, I should probably make again.

I am very annoyed about the waste of food and money. Even though I could save the day.

Pudding makes everything better

We don't often have pudding and on Saturday, Cecil had guavas. I have fond and not so fond childhood memories of guavas. Stories for some other time and place.

Anyhow, I stewed them (with less sugar than my mother would have used) last night ahead of turning them into a dessert for dinner with friends in a couple of days time.

I couldn't resist and dished some up and served them with yoghurt (not custard or milk as I would have had them in childhood).

Delicious flavour memories and a good way to deal with Tuesday's trials.

Until next time, be well

If this post might seem familiar, it's because I'm doing two things:

  • re-vamping old recipes. As I do this, I am adding them in a file format that you can download and print. If you download recipes, buy me a coffee. Or better yet, a glass of wine....?
  • and "re-capturing" nearly two years' worth of posts.
I blog to the Hive blockchain using a number of decentralised appplications.
  • From Wordpress, I use the Exxp Wordpress plugin. If this rocks your socks, click here or on on the image below to sign up.
